Can they really not be rooted from cuttings?

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I won this auction on ebay and I received the seeds. Have them soaking now to plant. But, I went back and read the description and see that it says that they can't be rooted from cuttings. Is this normal for Brugs, or is this a particularily difficult one?

The only reason I ask is so I can remember to mark it as such, so I don't inadvertantly send a cutting to someone later when it has no chance of survival from cuttings if this is so.

I'm trying to learn everything I can about these beautiful plants, so please forgive my ignorance.

They're harder to root but it is possible! I think Jeanne and Liz could probably give some pointers.

I've got 7 cuttings from a local guy that I am hoping will root. After 11 days only the skinniest tip cutting looks a bit unhappy. The ones from farther down the branch still have perky little leaves just like the first day. I have them on a heat mat under fl. lights in 2 inch pots with good potting soil. I'm getting some sand today for the surface to ward off fungus gnats. The guy I got the cuttings from has a large plant in a pot on his porch (probably not in the rain). It had been out there all winter (he lives in Tacoma, WA) and was leafing out nicely. Hopefully, I can get at least one of them to root.

When I tried rooting mine 3 out of 6 made it so don't give up.......

Auburn, WA(Zone 8b)

cc, thanks. That's good news. I'd be ecstatic if three of them made it. What methods did you use? Did they take a long time?

I used vermiculite, and dipped them in the Schultz root stimulator, liquid, and watered with a diluted solution of it.(its in the yellow bottle)
I kept them in the small 3 tier GH till rooted

Last year I rooted mine in a cup that stayed above my sink. That was before I knew they had that reputation! Then this fall I had no luck. I should try again now that I have the correct season here.

Did I miss somewhere where you guys are mentioning which brug you are talking about that is difficult to root from a cutting.

sewcrazy, Maybe sometime when I am going over the mountains to see my family just north of Sumner, we can get together and talk brugs. Donna

It is in the link Joan posted Donna. A sang.

Donna, I'd love to meet you! We live north of Sumner/Lake Tapps just across the county line in Auburn. Maybe we could do some trading. :)) I grew up in Sumner.

Thanks for the info. So, if I'm understanding this correctly, this type of Brug WILL root from cuttings, it's just not easy to get them to, right? The ad with the seeds made it sound like it was not possible at all.

JoanJ, you'll love Sandyv63 she is a great seller, and responsiable. I know from my experiences with some buyers on ebay, if they can't get something to grow they usually blame the sellers. Don't give up, it won't hurt to try! I myself have had no luck with that particular Brug, it just sits there, not a bloom one. I'd love some pointers on how to get that one to bloom, have had all others do fine. Carny

I've bought seeds from Sandyv63 before too, and she is great.

If I get this brug to grow up and bloom, I'll take notes and let you know. I'm not very experienced with Brugs yet, since last year was my first year. I did get two brugs to bloom before winter, then I held them all over in the dormant stage until spring. I've had a few problems with a couple of them, but I'm learning and loving it.
I now have 5 brugs, and working on getting more. LOL! It's an addiction, along with the daylilies, iris, roses....

Oh well, I could be addicted to a lot worse things I guess. :)

If the cuttings are wet they don't root. Lots of air in the soil- loose soil.

I failed with most attempts to root sanguineas last summer, but had success with one. The ones that failed was either too green cuttings or semi-woody put into water. The one that rooted took a long time and it was an 6 inch semi-woody piece about ½ inch thick. I put it is a loose, lightly moist peat based soil, but gee, that took a long time.

WEll, maybe my cuttings have hope yet. I did uproot two of them to see if anything was happening, but they looked like they were just starting to root. I had them on a heating mat. So now I have them off the mat and I guess it is just wait and see.
