Bio Filter Media

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

What does everyone out there use for their filter media?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Pea gravel - it's a filter about 3'x3' (10" deep), and I also sink pots of Water Celery (Oenanthe javanica) and taro plants in this area.

Montezuma, NM(Zone 5b)

I use volcanic rock. Same stuff used for gas BBQ grills. Not used though!

I thought of volcanic rock but after researching it decided not to. Even though it looks porus is not. You need as much surface area as possible in contact with the water. There is a product Alfagorg but can not find it around here.

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

I use a product that is similar to Springflo. I find it very easy to clean the filter.

Ponditis Do you have a place that I can buy the product.
Found where to buy filter pad white bulk at 14.00 per foot. Fifty six inches wide. Thought I could use it as a divider between the media.

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

I use lava rock in one, those plastic things with holes in the second, and (strangely enough) sponges in the other. In all the reading and searching I've done it seems that anything that has small holes in it that can hold or grow "bacteria" in it will work. I've also learned from experience that it takes up to 2 years for good bacteria to take hold.

MaMa "T" :)

Ted, it works. The pictures are good too. Thanks for the images.

I really hesitate to mention my spring-flo type stuff that I used in a public forum but it was bought from a package supply wholesale store for about $28 for about 4000 feet of the stuff. I bought the narrowest stuff they had because the narrow has more surface area than the wide. It is the plastic strapping that is used in shipping boxes around the planet. Just make sure that you wash it well to remove any chemicals or oils used in manufacturing and cram it in to the filters hard. You can put as much in as you can cram and it is still easy to clean. About once every three years or so you will need to remove it and really clean it but in the meantime it is just swirled around and drained a couple of times. I cut the roll of strapping a couple of times just because I wanted to be able to remove it easier.

Thanks Ponditis excellent advice. Off the public just E-mail me. OK
Now to find me someone I know with a tax number. You are a world of information.

Just call around and tell them it is a cash only sale. Many of them will sell to the public that way. Good luck.
