I just subscribed to this wonderful "resource center" and I have so many questions for all you seasoned gardeners! I'm a very beginner gardener, but still loving it! I just realized that the two questions I posted yesterday were under someone else's questions. Oops! Sorry! I have a Wisteria growing on a large trellis attached to a retaining wall. I planted it 2 summers ago. Now it is covered with flowers, but only on the top of the wall where it receives full day sun. The rest of it, about 6 ft tall on the trellis, receives only a half day of afternoon sun and has absolutely no leaves or flowers! What should I do about this? Should I have pruned it back to allow for new growth?
Wisteria
Hi Rosie, Welcome to Dave's!
As you've probably found out, the Wisteria is a rampant grower, hope that trellis is a very sturdy one! I have trained mine into a tree and it will sprout new growth just about everywhere. I'm not sure I understand where it's planted, do you have a photo?
Violabird - Just found out that Rosisun lives in No Atlanta, maybe we all can meet at the swap!!
Oh, I hope so...I just can't wait to meet everybody!
How about it Rosie? Take a look here: http://davesgarden.com/t/371479/
Would love to, but will be on vacation! Maybe I can get in on the next one, though! You all sound like you have so much fun on here!
Violabird, I wish I did have a picture of the WIsteria, but I don't. I'll try to be very discriptive. I have an approximately 6ft wide/6-7ft tall concrete retaining wall attached to the side of my house. On this I have a latticed trellis attached into the concrete (though how good I'm not sure!!) I planted my Wisteria 2 summers ago, then already reaching 5 ft or so and wound it all through the lattice where it looked full and beautiful, of course, having just come from Pike's Nursery! Anyway last summer it grew sprouts all over the old vines and looked full again, but this summer 98% of the growth is only at the very top of the lattice where it reaches the top of the concrete retaining wall and can peak over the top. Up there it probably has 50+ flower clusters and looks gorgeous! BUT the whole area of trellis is just brown vine with maybe 3 shoots off the poor thing! Maybe I should just grow something right over that part that will stay shorter, or can I fix this problem?? I just keep staring at my naked white trellis, sniffle, sniffle!!!
Hummn, too hot for the wisteria? Not enough room between the lattice and wall? Got me stumped here. What exposure is it? Maybe a Clematis, or Moonvine, or Morninglories, or... the list goes on. A pic would sure help! Sorry!
