It actually has one thick trunk but has so many sideshoots going all the way up. I was going to take them off but they all have buds on them even the ones at the very bottom by the dirt. I would think the sideshoots are taking the strength from growing the canopy out. I can't wait to have it bloom to make sure it is a Golden Lady......LOL! With me you can never be sure! It is quite tall!
my Golden Lady alley tree.....LOL
here is a shot of the bottom sideshoots.
I can see in the last picture, that I need to put more velco on it to keep it from being bowlegged! LOL
I guess I shoud cut these off and start them. I am hoping they will root faster than my other cuttings of this one. Does anyone else have the problem of them just sitting there forever without changing one bit, few root quickly!
Looks like your going to have a brug blooming (totem pole style)show in a few weeks *grin*. It looks so healthy! How old is it? Is she a fast grower?
Look at your cute cat peeking out!
You need to post some pictures of your yard! So we can see your jungle. I bet it looks lovely!
Kristi
That is Maxey Cat Kristi, he is my lover boy. I did not even realize he was in the pic...lol.......I was so intent to make sure no weeds showed!
This is the mother plant of yours. I got it last spring and it grew all summer in my garden in the ground. When I dug it out it was a bush. I do not remember how it got to be a tree like this. It may have grown a side shoot over winter in the hoop house and I airlayered it but I think not for it is all flowering wood to the very bottom and no Y in sight. So it must be the piece I got from Logees last year. A mind is a terrble thing to lose! LOL
Kell, you never will get a alley tree like Monikas or mines if you will not cut the sidesprouts. In 4 months you will have a large, very large bush but not a tree.
Sorry for being honest.
I agree that you need to cut the shoots off. I found this brug really good about sending side shoots. How tall is this one anyway? Looks like it is getting right up there.
I know I need to............but then they budded and I am such a wuss. The bottom ones are getting huge, I need to soon or they will leave a huge scar.
Sadly Ludger, even if I cut them all off I doubt if I will ever get an alley tree like you both have.
Did you root yours Brugie? Did they just sit there forever?
You will if you cut..lol.
It is just over 7 feet Brugie, I just went out to see.
Isn't it unusual for one to grow so tall from the flowering region and not from the vegetative region?
I just checked, each sideshoot has at least 3 big buds on it............so hard for me to go clip clip!
Kell- the one you sent me has buds on it. I'm leaving them on, even if the plant is only a few inches tall *grin* I want blooms this season. Thank you again.
Kell.....clip!! Either that or plan on having a bush. Mine were clipped and rooted to give away. Some time, one extra one sliped in on me and mine had two trunks. I cut one this spring when I put it outside. Am trying to root those now.
Kell . . . if you clip away I could use a cutting. I am Golden Lady less. It would be a tough decision!
I have some rooting already Deb................ but do not forget to badger me. I am so bad about getting things boxed up.
Wow, Kell, how'd you do that?
I wouldn't be able to cut it either!!!! Want to see it bloom. Please take a pic when it does.
Kell, my Golden Lady makes all kinds of little side shoots that bloom, usually with 2 or 3 buds. Then they usually don't do anything else after blooming.I think it's a Golden Lady trait. Yes, mine is now an alley tree, it's about 10 ft tall with a nice canopy and it still makes the little side blooms.
I would cut off the bottom shoots though, they will grow up and make a bushy plant with multiple trunks. Pick the strongest one and root it for yourself, you might get an even better alley tree. Those bottom shoots are usually easy to root, I haven't had any trouble with them.
Kell, I am anxiously waiting for mine that you sent me to take off. I planted it outside and so far it is looking great. I just found buds on my Creamsickle. I am so excited about these new brugs I have this year. Are you by any chance going to Susan's plant exchange on Saturday in San Leandro? LMK
Patricia
Patricia............you have email!
PS: I am envious of your creamsickle buds......... OK.....downright jealous!
Kell..that's a toughie!
Just to confuse you even more LOL...I'd wait for the flowers to open, pollinate them and wait for pods. In the mean time...i'd be pinching out any new or extra growth on the side shoots to prevent them from getting any bigger!
When the lower pods are all harvested i'd remove the lower side shoots! You'd still end up with a standard tree shape...the only draw back would be that it wouldn't have that flawless pole-like trunk many aim for! You'ld still have the option of being able to share the side shoot cuttings in the fall!
Best of luck,
Bruno
Kell, what a neat picture of your Golden Lady. I'm certainly no expert on different types of growth, such as trees, but seems like the rest are giving you good advice. There is so much to see in your photo, I really enjoyed looking at it. If by chance you do do some clipping, I would really like to have a start. I don't see Golden Lady listed in Logees most recent catalog. I did get Pink Beauty from them a couple of weeks ago, it is looking good. Again really nice shot, your kitty, the bench or table whatever and all the plant material. Donna
Kell, did you get my e-mail? Just checking
