Gloriosa Lily Bulb

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I already posted this question in the Vines forum but thought I might reach more people here. Will the Gloriosa Lily vine grow down a wall if it has no support or trellis to climb up?

Saucier, MS(Zone 8b)

This bulb needs support. Mine have reached 5ft. or more. Without any support they will not grow well or be attractive.

What is the secret for flowers? Mine are at least 3-4 years old, and no signs of blooms yet. They do have support.

I just tried ordering one of these yesterday but they were out. So it sounds as though they are worth while??

I thought it was a neat plant but I was not thoroughly enchanted with it. LOL I bought a small tuber in a bag and started it indoors then planted out in spring. It bloomed the same summer. The tuber was only about the size of my finger.

How do you plant those funny looking tubers? Up and down or sideways?

Saucier, MS(Zone 8b)

Hi,

I plant mine side ways, mine
always bloom beautifully. I have a lot but wish had gotten
more when Home Depot had them a few years ago for a dollar each,
then marked them down 50%!!!!
They don't carry thim anymore!!

If you keep the tubers every year, you will get bigger plants with flowers that repeat for a couple of months. Definitely worth it! My neighbor had one for 5 years, it grew to more than 10' high by the end of summer, and probably had 30 flowers! Magnificent!

notmartha, you plant them vertically, not horizontally. Mine came with an illustration. There is definately what looks like one end of the bulb has been cut off and healed; that is the top.
Aggie, if yours hasn't bloomed it could be too little sun, a problem I may have, or planted too deep or even too little phosphorus. We are very low in phosphates where I live and I use an awful lot of bone meal.

Hi -- We hadn't grown it indoors for years but stuck a couple of bulbs in a 10" tub this May -- The result is in a pic in PDB pictures. We had some say plant horiz. others vert. We did horiz covered with 2 " in a soil mix recommended by supplier of bulbs and elsewhere in Dave's Garden. They also need a bit of ground limestone. The key to lots of blooms is enough sunlight to induce branching at about 2 ft. (which ours didn't do. The east window was not adequate as it is partly shaded by trees. Next year will use south window. allandown

Thanks, alan. Mine didn't make it. My husband dug them up by accident. Grrrrr. I will try again next spring...

Just to let you know. Mine did BLOOM! Very big flowers, well worth the wait. Waiting for the seed pods to dry out (like yea, right, with all the wet we've had in NC) Have a pic, but haven't been able to post here.

Here is what our living room looked like in August. Had only 12 blooms, not quite enough sunlight, going to start put to "sleep" until March and will see what happens. My favorite color is deep red !!! allan
