Stange acting cutting

Ellabell, GA(Zone 8a)

I have one cutting taken above the Y that is growing straight up like a stick. It hangs a flower along the trunk every now and then, but is not branching even though it's 3 feet tall.
It's a no name white, and I'm thinking about throwing it out.
Is there any hope that it will eventually turn in to something other than a stick?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'd give it some time. Even those cuttings from above the Y do branch out with time. If you have had it for a very long time, you might want to toss it, but I'd give it time. I'm always up for a challenge......keeps me occupied.

Sometimes they send up a new sprout from the bottom too.

Maybe you will get an alley tree out of it. I have a 7 foot above the ground Golden Lady alley tree that was taken above the Y. It is so odd. It puts out sideshoots from the ground up and the side shoots all have buds. I must cut them off to keep the tree shape but I am having a terrible time making myself do it! Now that I am thinking about it, the top has not branched out well......maybe because it is from the flowering region originally?

you know I have cuttings that are growing from the base of the plant (side shoots?) but not much is going on on top? what does it mean? If anyone is tossing--toss this way? ill send postage and the box and everything.

If you are talking about suckers Play, they come up from the ground not from the main trunk. They are great. Mine grow tall, straight and fast. I have been making alley trees out of them.

they are coming out of the ground Kell-should i leave the top stalk? they are about ummmmm a foot tall right now, do I wait till later and sever them from the base? there are some that the main cutting is not leafing but it has a sucker coming from base below soil level and their are others that the cutting has a few leaves but the sucker coming up is growin much faster? Thank you once again for the seeds by the way:) hope soemone does something wonderful for you soon. cheryl

I let my suckers grow as tall as I want the tree to be then I cut them off or airlayer them. I airlayered in late summer and fall and now I would just cut them off and let them root in soil for everything is easier in spring. Ones I have cut off too short, then Y too short. The ones I leave on grow very tall and then I cut them off.

Maybe you want to keep the sucker on that root system and cut off the old plant if it is not doing so well. I have done that also.

I find it hard to cut off the sideshoots and the suckers to toss to keep the shape of my alley tree. Monika must be so disciplined about it. I just do not have room to root everything unfortunately!

Hope you get something good from the seeds Play, but they are such fun regardless of what you get!
