Bulbs that sprout but never bloom

Cambridge, MA(Zone 6a)

I have a bunch of what look like daffodils (I didn't plant them; they were there when I moved in), which sprout leaves every year, but never bud or bloom. The area has southeastern exposure and gets sunshine all morning in the spring, until the trees leaf out. The soil seems well drained, but may have been compacted a couple of years ago, when the house underwent renovations.

So what's going on here? Are the bulbs too deep? Should they be moved somewhere else?

could they be surprize lilies?

cc...what the heck are surprize lilies?????

This is typical of daffs; they benefit from being devided every three years. Dig them up when the leafs fade; and separate all the small bulbs. Plant them an inch apart; fertilize, and you'll hopefully have some flowers next year.

lycoris squamigera.

They send up leaves in the spring that look like daffodils (fatter though) then the leaves die back like all the other spring bulbs, later in the summer ,up comes a bare naked stalk with lily blooms.....
