Wanted Viburnum carlesii 'Carlcephalum'

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

This is a cross between Viburnum carlesii x Viburnum macrocephalum. I grew it in my last garden (zone 8) vigorous and growing to 8 feet wide and high in 2 years. This cultivar is similar to others but the flower heads don't droop. In exchange I can offer cuttings of Viburnum plicatum 'Maresii' (Zone 5) Light green foliage with spectacular white blooms along graceful horizontal branches. Here is a photo of 'my' shrub that I grew in my former garden. It has to be this one folks!! :-)

Hello Louisa, I have grown Viburnum 'Carlcephalum' for about 7 years, and it has formed a splendid bush. At the moment, it is getting ready to bloom, although the cold weather is delaying this somewhat. The entire garden will be scented with a fragrance reminiscent of Hyacinth. I will be pruning it after it blooms, so would be happy to send cuttings. Perhaps you have some unusual Geranium(s) to share? If interested, please let me know how many cuttings, and if you'd like them a particular length. Best wishes, John

That's great John!! I tried unsuccessfully to grow cuttings when I moved to this city but was tied up with other things and neglected them. Layering is best of course. So yes, thank you I will gladly take cuttings. As for my geraniums, more the readily available cultivars and still quite young plants (newish garden) but I can send you some of the more rampant varieties. I do have another Viburnum, relatively new to the US if you are interested in cuttings. It is the Viburnum awabuki Chindo.....

Hi Louisa,

Great, as soon as it blooms I will take some cuttings for you. For some reason, pictures are not being displayed at present on the compute, so will look at your Viburnum later. Sounds nice!

I have G. alba, Samobar, Mourning Widow, and that's about it! Maybe one or two more, they are all small, just getting started. Really like how they look with Heuchera companions, another new interest.

John thanks again. Once the geraniums bloom I will be able to identify them and let you know what I have. (I don't know where the name tags are). Since moving into a new house my life has been topsy turvy and then some. I think you will love the Viburnum awabuki Chindo. It's had some rave reviews.

John just replied to your mail. I'm still puzzled over the fragrance though - but no matter, I'll take it!!! I always think it a good idea to take as long a cutting as possible - I'm sure it has a better chance in the mail - then I can cut it up into smaller lengths. BUT - please do what you have always done - I'm just so happy to know I'm getting this again. Let me know what you want.
