New growth, mid-April
Is this one plant?
Sorry for the delay - yes, one plant.
I'm planting seeds of this this year -- now I know to leave plenty of room! I think I'm witner sowing them ... winter might finally be here in New York state ...
Hi hczone6,
Do you prune down to ground every fall or spring?
Thanks, Evan
It dies down to the ground every year. I just pull up the dead stems and let it grow back the next season. If you leave the seeds in the pods and let it self-seed, you'll end up with quite a few babies the next spring. I've got several that grew from seed.
This is a very hardy plant. I don't know if it self sows or just spreads under ground. The blooms are attractive and so are the bid seed pods with the tiny, sparse seeds.
This year I have cut it down a lot because it spreads beautifully, but for me it crowds out a lot of my blooming plants. It grows well with amsonia (a light blue flower) which has more woody stems.
