The head of our IT Dept passed this along to me:
I am not one to pass along information unless it has been verified. So
here goes:
If you go to www.google.com and type in your telephone number it will
may actually pull up directions to your house! If you have a published
number, it can happen to you... it happened to me.
Many people are unaware of this service. I know I was. If your number
comes up, there is a way to have your number removed. Please read below.
Go to www.google.com then type in your phone
number (separated by hyphens,
including area code, like this 000-000-0000) and click on Google Search.
If your phone number is listed, it will show your name and address and
give you two map options: Yahoo and MapQuest. See how accurate the map
is to your home.
Any person wishing to discover the physical location of a phone number,
be it a home or business address, could use this feature to locate a
physical street address, and receive directions on how to get there from
anywhere in the country. In this day of instant online access certain
information is too much.
If your number and address are listed by Google, simply right click on
the telephone icon to the left of your name address and phone number and
open that in a new window. It will take you to a page with instructions
on how to remove your number from the Google directory located at:
(http://www.google.com/help/pbremoval.html). Fill out the form, entering
all information exactly as it appears in your phonebook entry. Doing so
will mean your residential listing does not appear in Google for any
phonebook search, even searches conducted on your name instead of your
phone number.
