The "spring peepers" arrived the other day singing away. Hubby considered grabbing the bb gun and doing target practice. I didn't really think toad guts was all that appealing. Yuck! The morning after we had 3 pairs of toads in the pond. I knew what I would be greeted with when I got home from work...and sure enough I was right. Eggs...by the millions. *gag* I grabbed the net and started scooping. I've been told that toad eggs are rather toxic to a small water garden like mine and by golly I'm not taking any chances. Hubby started catching the toads and shall we say flopping them into a 5 gallon bucket. Those toads were still singing away in the bucket and the noise was reverberating out of the bucket. Up close they sound like they're in great pain. Trust me...they weren't. Just still trying to..ummmm.. (saying as politely as I can)making "eggs". After the task of tossing the millions of eggs on those gross slimy strings (huge yuck) Hubby and I stood there trying to decide what to do with the toads. He decided that after bowling that evening we'd take them to a local stream. So there we were 10:00 at night trying to catch the rest of the toads with a flashlight trying NOT to grab my frog. I'm sure the neighbors think we've completely lost our minds. When we got to the local stream and let the toads go free all I kept thinking about was the local newspaper headlines the next morning: Local Watergardener Arrested For Dumping Toads Into Stream...LOL When in reality that's probably where they came from. :)
Cute Story
I need help here also with my toad. They are everywhere. Singing up a storm all night. LOL. But kinda like the sound and I can bear to do away with them. Just now wonder what I am going to do with a million of them next year. LOL
HeHe,Me too azsteve905.Have the bedroom windows open and its my way of camping out these days!Do I need to get all the tadpoles out or should I leave them? Found a salamander about 9 inches long with a baby under a log Easter morn. Also my first water lily bloomed Easter morming.Just wanted to look at it all day long.Even DH thought it was beautful!Just love water gardens!!! Oh by the way, the name of our farm is Toad Hill because of a 5 foot Toad my DH got from a job at the Museum of Science and History. We always have alot of frogs and toads around even before the pond. Are too many a bad thing? Thanks for the info!
I'm getting confused ....... is this about frogs or toads? Either way, I would LOVE to have either come to my pond to "make eggs" - you wanna send me a few???
Grins
Mine were definitely toads....guaranteed. My toads are a brownish color and the frog is green. These goofy toads were "crying" for attention and since the water garden is about 30 feet from my home and bedroom window good grief the noise. lol We can tolerate the noise though...it's the toad eggs. Yuck!! Once I heard that those eggs were toxic to my small pond I certainly wasn't taking any chances. I did notice how strong smelling they were when I was scooping them out. Wow!! Stinky!! lol I've also been told that fish will eat the eggs. Mine won't. Even if I don't feed my fish for a week they still don't.
I read on a website somewhere about the biggest differences between toads and frogs but I can't find it again. Sorry..
