Walking Stick

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Looking for some cuttings of Harry Lauder's Walking Stick that I would try to root. Thought it would look good with the contorted willow.
Happy to pay postage for some clippings.

I just bought two of those walking stick trees at Walmart! But they were gifts and I've already given them away! Sorry. I've been looking for this tree for years. If you happen to have any starts of the contorted willow, I'd sure like to have one of those. If I visit the Walking Stick trees any time soon, I'll try to take a cutting for you. How would you suggest I do the cutting so it would root well?

Cut about 8" length off several individual branches around the beginning of June or end of May, wrap in wet paper towels and plastic baggie and should be good to send. I have lots of corkscrew willow and it roots easily in soil with heat mat or in water (although roots may be tender in water so need a bit of care when planting). E-mail me and we'll be glad to get you some. Right now it is just filling out with leaves so should wait a week or two before cutting for you to root, but you are welcome to it. I have sent some in past years and think folks are happy with its propagation. I actually started all of mine from a bunch that I bought of 8' long cuttings at a garden show years ago and that generated a lot of plants.

Thanks, Haighr! Sounds easy enough! You have mail. The tree kinda fades into the background of this picture, but I think you can make it out! Rose

haighr,I am looking for the walkin stick also, not to go with the willow, want it in back,I am going to run to wally world to see if they have them.
My question is,on the willow,I am rooting a few for folks here,I have a 6ft one for Shirley,I took a big one since I don't have to ship it,it has filled a 2ltr bottle with roots, should I put it in a pot till I take it to her?or wait to go right in the ground?

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I think I'd pot it root in some very loose soil and keep well watered. The roots are very fragile in the beginning so I would try to put it in a peat pot that can go right into the ground without moving the roots again.
Roshanna, got the email and will get some willows out to you soon. The sundrops aren't up just yet so may be a week or so if you aren't in any big rush.

haighr,
I visited the walking stick trees this weekend, but just couldn't bring myself to take any cuttings! They are still small and have only been in the ground about 2 weeks. They looked wilty and I didn't want to cause them any more stress. So perhaps later in the season, if they've put on some growth, I'll send you a few cuttings. Sorry. Rose

No problem roshana, no sense destroying one in an effort to just get a cutting. I have plenty of time and still need a spot to get one started. When I look at all the seedlings etc. that I have started, I already have my hands full. Got dahlias coming from the co-op and also dug some quince shoots that I am nursing to transplant.
Thanks for whenever you can get some,
Candee

OK, Candee. I have a note to send you some when the time is right. Rose

A bit pricey, but couldn't resist. Tinkmon may come by on Tuesday and get some cuttings from it.

let me know if you get any cuttings to take and how you did it. So glad you got one!!

It is quite large now about 4' tall. Tinkmon is coming for a visit next week (we have never met just found out on this forum that he is from Hagerstown and interested in Harry Lauder's). He wants to get some cuttings, so will keep you posted.

click into www.plantdelights.com website. this nursery in North Carolina has all kinds of unusual plants, they also have the walking stick. What I've gotten from them have been very healthy plants, I've been very pleased with them.

I ordered two t.wagnerianus from them, but they haven't come yet. I bought a walking stick from our local nursery and it is doing great. It was expensive $79 but already 4' in height and a came in a huge bucket. Thanks for the info about plantdelights as I have never ordered from them before.
