Californian, New Zone, New To Dave's Garden

(Zone 9a)

Greetings, all! I am moving the end of this month from Sunset zone 22-24, (USDA Zone 10) where I have spent all of my 51 years to date. DH and I will be in Sunset zone 15 (USDA 9b, the zip code search says)once we've moved. I am blessed with a considerable amount (by California standards) of gardening area that will, for the first time in my life, be separate from the dogs' yard.

The gardening area is on a slope and my first impression is that it will want to be terraced over time. From what I saw when we looked at the house to buy it, the area gets sun part of the day, primarily in the afternoon. I'll know more about that in a few weeks. I also noted some apparently native fern growing in the garden area, meaning that I may have more acidic soil for the first time in my life also! There are some iris, not yet blooming, and I'll want to leave those alone until I find out what they look like when they do bloom.

I am excited at the possibilities and look forward to picking some brains here as I attempt to learn what I can and can't do with success in this entirely new-to-me gardening venue! Japanese maples, azaleas, maybe even herbaceous peonies! Oh, the possibilities!

I do note that it appears upon casual visual examination that it may prove to be that the price of living on a hillside is having to do a lot more soil conditioning than I've needed to do along the Los Angeles riverbed, where I've been for the last fourteen years. I haven't actually handled it, but the soil appears a lot less friable than what I've been dealing with.

I'm pretty excited and happy about this move, in case that's not coming through loud and clear! A life's dream coming into fruition for this city gal!
