Acnistus bloomed today :)

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

*lol* Thanks to a very special, friend I got this plant as a rooted cutting last summer.

It has grown pretty much since and short time ago it went straight into a 10 l. pot.

Here is a flower. There are several open.

I don`t know much about them, but I self pollinated them.

Tonny...They should pollinate for you! I grow mine outside..it's a pity that the flowers are hidden by the foliage! I had one bloom last year that was shredded like culebra!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Bruno, I had a white one like that this spring. Not all the blooms were shredded, only part of them.

I hate to show my stupidity, but is Acnistus a variety of Brugmansia or something seperate. Beautiful color, I would love to have one if I knew where to get it. Donna

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

RuthO - Acnistus are the same family as brugs but they're a different genus. I wonder if the Acnistus stays shorter than the Iochromas? That's a nice shaped plant you have there Tonny.

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

Acnistus stay shorter than Iochromas. After Easter I will visit a nursery next to us here, they have all of them.
I want to have a white Acnistus, too. My blue ones are doing great here.

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, my goodness!!! Tonny, that is the most beautiful flower!!! Is it fragrant? Do they have those in the US? I'm a purple/blue flower lover...that's gotta go on my must have list!!! First thing in the morning, I'm going to the nursery and telling them they have to figure out how to order one and overnight it to me...hahaha!!

Burlington, ON(Zone 6a)

I think it is only fair to tell you if you have not seen this plant that this flower is small. Mine is only about 2-3 inches so be prepaired.... it is no where near the size of a Brugmansia flower. [I was really not aware of this when I planted the seeds for it.]

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Hehehe...if it's purple, it doesn't matter...if it's fragrant AND purple, it's gotta be mine!

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

Bruno, thanks for the tip. I hope there will be some pods now, so the seeds can be shared later on :)

Cala, the white look as beautiful as the bluish. Its curious that yours started to shred for a period. Do you have any thoughts on, why the suddenly do?

Donna, when it is about Acnistus I know as little as you do. They are not Brugs and this one has 2 # flowers, but I know not the next thing about species and grow they by hit and miss method and just got lucky. *lol* Now I know from Cala`s picture that there is a white one, too.

Thanks, Sue. It has more buds on their way to open and I am surprised, how nice it will look, when in full bloom.

Ludger, thanks for mentioning that Acnistus are different from the Iochromas. I know my Dats the best, but when it come to Acnistus I do not know more about them as a cat could bake a bread *lol* Thanks for the info :)

Meiyu, it is blue alright *lol* I had a severe round of the cold, so I can not tell you, if it is fragrant *lol* I can not smell the flowers, but I like the way the leaves smell, not that they are perticular well-smelling, though :)

RA, thanks for reminding me of the importance to mention flower size. There was a lot of posts about Acnistus last year, but so many nice new folks has started visiting since :)

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Meiyu, I took some cuttings from my blue one, if they root, you're welcome to one. I had these left over last year, I threw a couple dozen away in the fall because I didnt have room for them. Now that they are blooming for me, I wish I had them back!

Co.Wicklow, Ireland(Zone 8b)

Acnistus grow really easily from seed and if started early enough they'll flower in their first year! Hopefully I have some seed to share this year too!

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Cala, you did what? God, I wish you wouldn't tell me things like that...will you look at how empty my back yard is?? I'd love a cutting if you can spare it! Did you see my bromeliad post and my champagne elegance post? I could send you babies of those, if you'd like!
Tonny, check out this blue delphium (something like that?) I just got yesterday!!! This is the bluest flower I've ever seen...I got the last one and had to knock down an old lady to grab it before she did!...hahaha...kidding.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

wow, that's one awesome color. Does anyone have a couple of seeds for that one or something similar? Let me know and what I can send in return. I don't need much, just 2 or 3 seeds. That's really pretty. I can't believe it grew that much in one year.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Meiyu, I will share the cuttings with you. I will have to check out your posts to see what those plants you mentioned are, lol.
I won't mention tossing plants ever again.(I do have an aunt that instead of coming in and hugging my neck, she goes straight to the compost pile to check for plants)

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

Meiyu,
That is real blue *lol* In Denmark these are called something that translate as Knights spurs (is spurs the right word? ... like the spurs on the boots of an ironclad knight from the middelage?). Well, I will maybe soon be in the knocking-down-old-laidies-business myself (JK) *lol* On thuesday there is outsales of Laruel trees in the super marked. They are 3 ft tall on and stemmed up and cost 10 % of the price in a garden center *lol* It is the first to mill-principle *lol* Fresh laurreal leaves is extra delicious in beef steakes.

Meiyu, you may be having the trouble I was having last night, I couldn't see the pics here. Then I deleted the temp files, rebooted the computer and it was working finally. I see your post with the Delphinium pic, it's still there.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'm having the problem tonight. The only way I can see pictures is to shut IE down and bring it back up and then I can see some for a while and then it does it again. I think it must be an IE bug. Trying to download Netscape now to see if that is any different.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Me too...I cant see any pictures

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

okay, this is really getting weird...i keep posting and then return to the thread and it's not there. i think it's only ones with pictures. this is a test.

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

No, it's not just with pictures...the last post i see is from crestedchik, but i just posted before this. Maybe I should switch puters and see if my other one is doing the same thing...sorry if you all can see all my crazy postings! I'm not sure any of it's going through.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Meiyu, we can see you. It's really odd, lots of people are having trouble.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I shut my puter down and started back up and its working now......

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm on my laptop...it's okay now. I tried restarting my puter, but it didn't work. Have to wait for my son to fix it, I guess.
Anyway, where were we? Oh, yeah, spurs...yes, tonny you got it right. Spurs are also what our (San Antonio, Texas) winning basketball team is called.
What is laurel? At first I thought you were referring to mountain laurel, and I was thinking that I could send you as many of those as you like...they grow like weeds around here. But then, when you said something about steak, I realized you had to be talking about a different tree. What is it?
Anyway, thank you cala, I'd love a cutting. I could swear I posted this already, but I don't see it anymore, but if I'm repeating myself, I don't see my posting, so sorry. I have some plants I'm thinking you might like babies from. I'll email you tonight or tomorrow.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I think the laurel that Tonny means is Bay Laurel or Bay Leaf, Laurus nobilis. http://www-ang.kfunigraz.ac.at/~katzer/engl/generic_frame.html?Laur_nob.html

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

Yes, Susie. It was Bay leaf. We use them for beef meat. Makes it so tasty *lol* I am following up on old threads as there is no use of starting too many new to beat a dead horse again :) I was out in the yard this late evening and saw several large marble-ball shaped fruits on the Acnistus. Now we can play a game with marbles as when we was kids *lol* How do I know when to pick?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Tonny, best I can remember, they came off easily in my hand when they were ripe and were maybe a golden color instead of green. They have lots of little seeds inside.

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

Oh, I can`t wait to pick them. This feeling is the same as I had waiting for the first Datura pod ever in my garden. I did as Cheryl also do sometimes. I counted how many nights until they were finally ripe *lol* Can`t believe how big a child some of us can become, when something is just too exciting :D Apropos anticipiation I just went out in the night and took a few shots of Love in a Puff. It grows and grows. I will find the right forum for it and then post a link here :) Hope you will still be online to see it.

OK, I know which one it is now! I was thinking "nigella" for some reason!

city?? lol sticks, AR(Zone 7a)

Well here I go into groveling mode but first some questions? How does acnistus stand up to heat Cala? and can it be grown into a standard?------and ummm does anyone happen to have any seeds lying around that I might be able to start? I thougth when I saw the blue pic that it was Tonny playing around with the pics again :) Please over my panhandling of seed---I swear I try hard to restrain myself. Someday soon I hope to have really wonderful crosses to offer cuttings and such from---thanks to all those wondermous ppl who sent me seeds. cheryl

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Tonny, Beautiful plant. I just received my seeds from Germany that I ordered for my mom (Brugnanny) on Friday. Can't wait to see them grow and bloom. These were my first seeds that I have ordered. Any recommendations for germinating and growing??? Thanks. Lisa

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

Cheryl, no mine was blueish as in the pictures that I posted. When I fool around I usually do it, so it leaves no doubt (The easter bunny thread *lol*). I saw this in the botanical garden in Copenhagen as a standart, but it was not Brug-tall - maybe a little more than a meter high. Its was lovely to look at though and loaded with tiny trumpets. My specimen is more like a bush that branches from the pot.
I cross my fingers that you will soon have some nice hybrids to offer cuttings from :D

Hi Lisa, there is nothing like the excitement of waiting for special seeds coming up and especially when its you first time ordering them :D I have not tried an germinate them myself, but I guss its like sowing tomatoes, Datura and Brugs. Light soil that is kept moist and those will be up before the end of the month. I know that Susie (Cala) and Bruno know much more about germinating them :) If you should happen to locate your mom somewhere out in your garden, please tell her, that I will e-mail her today with some good news :)

Wow! its real cool with these sharp angular edges. I have to check if mine have those as well. It look like an inoxia that I once grew (it was pure white though and larger).

Its curious, but in botanical description of a edge as in your plant there is so many different ways to put it. Pentagonal with acute primary lobes and angular secondary lobes. Decagonal. Ten dentated border. I used to call the tendrils placed in the middle of the straight side for primary teeth and the place where the edge forms an angel for primary teeth. Some also call the secondary teeth for interacuminate lobules. In Brugmansia I am still amazed by the shape of the angels of the edge :)

city?? lol sticks, AR(Zone 7a)

how dainty :)

Heck Tonny, I simply call it a flower LOL! ;-)
