I'm looking to find some tale quality cherries that can handle late frosts, and cold spells in the winter. Long hot summers. I wanted Stella but I read they have cold tender buds. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Hardiest cherry trees
from what I understand sour cherries are easier to grow than sweet cherries. I live in mid Michigan USA
DENNIS - WE HAVE A STELLA WHICH PRODUCED FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS YEAR. THE CHERRIES WERE MOUTH WATERING AND WONDERFUL WITH NO CRACKS. THE BIRDS GOT ABOUT HALF OF THE CROP AND WE ATE PLENTY WHILE PICKING ALSO. ALREADY LOOKING FORWARD TO A CROP NEXT YEAR. WE LOST 2 NORTH STAR CHERRIES AFTER 3 YEARS HERE BEFORE THEY EVER PRODUCED. MIGHT HAVE BEEN THE CLAY SOIL AND NOT PLANTED ON A GENTLE SLOPE LIKE THE STELLA THOUGH - WE PREFER SWEET CHERRIES OVER SOUR ONES ANYWAY.

Thanks for the info. I do have a stella on my "5-way" cherry, I have high hopes for it. Too young to produce this year. I haven't yet tried a sour cherry, I think I like sweet ones too.
I had a Northstar that did great, tons of cherries, and even though they are considered sour ,they were good eaten right off the tree.(Not as good as sweets though)
I lost it when I transplanted it.It lived through the winter, leafed out and bloomed in the spring and then croaked........
I had it for 5 years and it made it thru some wicked cold winters -20 or -25
Dennis, how late is your late spring frost normally(what ever that is). Last year we had a very bad frost-freeze April 23, got down to 22 degree F. and stayed that way all night. So I lost all my soft fruit. I have a Rainier and a Lapins cherry tree. This year had 6!!!Lapins, I netted 4 of them, the birds got the other 2. The Rainier had a good bloom but frost got about half. I did manage to get about a gallon or so of fruit before the birds got the rest. I love both of those trees. The Lapins is more resistant to damage from rain, which is sometimes (rarely) a problem here. The Rainiers are great for canning. Donna
