Brug seed advice needed ASAP

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Not my day for brugmansia luck! First my P&C seems to be dropping the buds I just pictured, anyone know why? SECOND and most important, I just knocked on the floor a whole pot of seeds just starting to sprout. I put them back in the soil and not sure what to do on the watering. Should I give them more water to settle them in or less so they don't rot? Thanks!

This is Not your best day??????????

Have you set the P & Cr. outside? I am putting my big brugs out in the GH, they are wilting something fierce!
Sun is shining, so have the door open. After growing them inside all winter, don't want to lose them now, but it sure seems to be a big shock for them outside, at least they are out of the wind, as that ruins the leaves also.

Hope someone comes along with some advice for both of us.

Kristi, water them in. I found lots just sprouting as I was transplanting the pots of seedlings. I just gave each one a pot of it's own and watered. They did fine. Can't help you with the bud drop. Sorry!!

All my versicolors are dropping buds in April, still. I am in 7b must be the same in your zones. Wait for 4 weeks more.

After that winter the versis need time to become powerfull again.
Brugie did say the right about watering...smile..can save my words.

Kristi, my Maya has been blooming for a couple of months and the other day I let it get a bit dry. Not dry enough to wilt, but enough to make some buds drop within a day or two.

Thats what my versi peach did too, when it got a little dry(well, maybe more than a little)it was loaded and now theres only one bud......

This is all just too sad for me this early in the morning!!

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Thank you all for the information. I suppose I must have let the plant get to dry. I'm a little lax on the inside watering. Now tell me, why doesn't this happen when the brugs are outside in the summer? More then once I've let them dry out in the summer and can't remember any buds dropping. Of course they may have and I didn't notice. Calla (nice to see you back-hope you stay) is your Maya in the GH or is it outside now?
I tell you, just when I think I have it figured out, LOL!
This is why I love these forums- I LEARN so much and there is always a expert out there to point me in the right direction. Of course the down side, the more I learn about brugs, the more I want! I'll be in the poor house soon!
Kell- don't be sad this early a.m. *grin*

I am off to bed for an hour or 2! I have been up and on line since 3 AM and time has flown till it is almost 8. My DH has already left for his last weekend of working.........for another year....... TAX time is [profanity removed] time!

I just looked outside and it looks like a storm is brewing. Yesterday was a beautiful day. I had big plans for planting more plant outside.

Well, time to grab my cuddle cat, and open a window so that the rain will lull me into a great sleep.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Have a good rest Kell! I forget your a couple hours behind us on the East coast.

In my own experience, changes in temperature, humidity, watering, feeding and potting on can all cause buds, seed pods and old leaves to drop!

I leave my greenhouse door open all day and close it at night! When I go in to my greenhouse during the day, after watering all my Brugs, I close the door behind me so the greenhouse is nice and cosy for me! 15 minutes later I hear a big l'amour bud thud on the ground,...then another! I thought to myself, "Why do they only drop when I'm here?" LOLOL "And, hey, Where did all those leaves on the ground come from? They weren't here when I came in!" but then I realised that the my earlier watering, and because I closed the door, the humidity and temperature were all suddenly increasing causeing the plant cells to expand to their fullest! They expand so much that buds and older leaves are dropped within a short space of time!

And the reason why it happens now and not in a summer drought is that at this time of year plants grow slowly, produceing young growth which doesn't have the sun to ripen it and along with this, cooler temperatures causing plant cells to grow more rigidly! Any sudden increase in watering and humidity causes weak cells at the Pedicel-to-stem joint to burst and the joint disconects.

A Good Tip: Don't let the Plants dry out. - If they do, don't over water them in your efforts to correct the dryness! I find keeping a tray or saucer placed under pots to catch extra water and act like a reserve, keeps bud and pod drop to a minimum!

Hope this was of some help guys,
Best wishes always,

Bruno

That helped me to understand the behavior of brugs, Bruno, thanks.
Mine had all perked up last night, they sure looked sad yesterday with the heat and sunshine, had the door open on GH, then had to worry about the wind!

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Thank you Bruno! You were a big help.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Bruno, I could have used that advice when I over watered a few plants last month! Today Maya wilted, the buds started dropping within hours. Twice in one week was too much for it. I guess I should transplant it into a bigger pot. It's outgrown the one it's in. We have had rain for days, then today it was sunny. I just didn't think they would wilt so fast.
Kristi, it's in the greenhouse. It got a bit ugly back in the winter because the Jungle House is only for holding them and it wasn't happy being that cool and crowded. I brought it into the brightest and warmest house we had and it took off.

Co.Wicklow, Ireland(Zone 8b)

Great!! Glad It was found usefull!

My Maya has had three X L'Amour pods on it all winter and they're just begining to ripen now! One of the pods is filled with rooting hormone liquid, but that's another story! LOLOL

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Gotta hear this one!!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I can't imagine what you will get Bruno from that combo! That is so exciting! I also can't believe that you would put rooting hormone in one of them...........LOL LOL LOL I would have gladly done your experiment on one of my frosty pods............LOL. I can just tell between you, Cala and Tonny, Dave's going to get more interesting by the day......LOL

Ok Bruno,
You don't think you are going to leave us just hanging on the rooting hormone do you? LOL Tell us all!!!!

Co.Wicklow, Ireland(Zone 8b)

LOLOL! Well...I got a bit scared when Calla said she had seeds germinating in her pods..so I took a peek at mine by makeing a slit in the pod! Luckily, everything was fine! I realised i'd just made big open wounds in my pods...so to protect the cut surfaces I painted on some rooting hormone that contained fungicide! I got a little bit carried away on one of the pods and said "Ah, sure what the hey". I picked up the bottle of liquid rooting hormone and poured it inside the pod till it was ouzeing with the stuff..LOL..and then resealed the pod ...LOL!
For noo reason atall...just me being eccentric! LOL

Bruno,
If it works why not. I like Cala use any and everything to seal my pods back up....so far no problems. I guess if I wasn't so impatient I'd just leave them along but that's no fun. LOL

Kristi, how is your back today? I'm hoping the report will be good. Take it easy. Everything will get done with time.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Thanks for asking Brugie- I'm very sore. Have a doctors appt. in the a.m. I did go out for a bit and it was ROUGH and hurt like heck.... Brugs will have to stay outside till hubby comes home. They made it through the night without damage that I can tell. As I type they are getting a bit sun burned, they'll bounce back.

Kristi,hope you will feel better,soon.

Sounds like the weather will be okay for brugs here tonight unless it storms badly. I'll still put the babies back inside for the night. The ones that look like sticks can take it. You should be okay for a couple of nights yet, but after you go to the doctor, and you feel better, don't go jumping into lifting pots. You will undo it all. I've had back surgery and let me tell you, if you can avoid it, please do. That means being good!!
