About 15 years ago, I had a bog of "Species Crocus" sent as a free bonus in a fall bulb order. Naturalized on a well drained slope these bloomed in a mixture of colors, but all were TINY. By this I mean all were less than 3 inches (7cm) tall with flowers about 3/4 inch (2cm). Over the years, the yellow flowered ones have disappeared. Any ideas on what these might be? (crocus chrysanthus ?, some variety of it? ) Or where I might get some replacements? I have bought "Species Crocus" 6 times since then and even c. chrysanthus by name, but have never got plants and flowers near this small size.
TIA
George

George, i hope this help ... http://www.paghat.com/crocusgoldilocks.html

george, i just planted crocus for the first time last fall, and they bloomed last month...once. they were a mixture of dwarf-sized flowers, white, yellow and purple. the tallest flower was about 2 inches...maybe 3 if you wanna push it. after the first flush of flowers, nothing. is this normal? if it is, you can have mine...the leaves that are left look like my weed grass only they have a thin white line down the center, and peter keeps thinking they're weeds and pull them out of the beds anyway.
Thanks to both of you for your replies. I dont think it was the variety on the linked page, as it definitely had no darker lines on the back of the flower, but perhaps a light blush of a darker color.
Yes Meiyu, that is typical of crocus, a very early spring bloom and then nothing. The leaves most commonly have the lighter line on them. Thanks for the offer, but you'll get to love them, they can be mowed over really early so they generally do well in a lawn and a large number of them naturalized is just wonderful.
THANX
George
