I am growing Canna for the first time, starting them indoors for transplanting outdoors in May. I have four each of the following varieties:
Rosemond Cole
Cleopatra
Pretoria
I plan to plant them in rows, shortest to tallest, in an area 6 X 9 feet.
Purchased from Horn, and potted 03~30 in a mix of 1/3 potting soil, 1/3 vermicompost, 1/3 sharp sand. Lots of water! Getting a mix of natural and HID light (12 hours a day).
All are now sending up their first leaves. SO FAST! Most have two or even three growth points.
Here's the question:
To maximize the drama and display, do I pinch back the growth points to only one per plant to select the single largest? Or do I just let them grow away and see what happens?
Thanks for your help and ideas.
Adam.

Canna Questions
Adam, that is one of the great things about canna, just let them grow as they will and they will be beautiful and do you proud :-)
Many thanks, ToadLily.

Hi Aotearoa,
Don't 'pinch' your cannas ..LOL
Just let them grow ..and they will be gorgeous!

My guys are coming up FAST! From the early show I have, it looks like this is going to be a blockbuster display.
Always glad to follow the advice of those in the know.
Thanks!
Adam.
IMHO, Adam the foliage is as much the prize as the flowers.
If you have not set them in the ground yet, but plan to do so, I would leave some space between each tuber- they multiply when given half a chance (even if you ARE in NOOO Yawk!)
Love, Lavanda
Not only New Yawk, Lavanda, but da Bronx! GO YANKS!
I'm planning on doing three staggered rows of four plants each with a minimum of 18 inches in every direction between plants. Is this enough?
It's a south~facing plot with no obstructions. Sun all day.
I surely do hope these things multiply. Then I'll have some groovy stuff to trade for all the luscious stuff I see being swapped around here.
;~)
Adam.
here in iowa we just let them grow--my 6 foot tall cannas with dark foliage multipled so much it about killed me to dig them up in the fall--i could seperate 1 plant into 6 plants--ended up with 30 to plant the spring
