Planting Herbs

Hammonton, NJ(Zone 6b)

I have raised beds in which I plan to plant herbs. Does anyone have any design plans for laying out herb plots?
Maybe someone has run across a good website dealing with this? Am starting the seeds indoors...but, the parsley and dill will go right into the ground, along-about now. Are there certain herbs that do better or well when "companion planted" next to...or with...certain other herbs?

My list is; basil, dill, marjoram, parsley, rosemary, tarragon, and thyme.

Somewhere I saw a picture of an herb garden that was planted between the spokes of one of those big old wheels like the covered wagons had, or an iron wheeled tractor. The wheel was lying flat on the ground and in each space was a type of herb. I thought it really looked super.

Thank you "poppysue" and "roshana"!! Those websites are going to be most helpful, and I really like the idea of the wagon wheel. Even though you don't actually have an old wagon wheel....the pattern concept is an intriguing idea that can be expanded on!

You both have given me good ideas, and lots to think about, for planning my herb garden. (Actually...Kitchen Garden!)

Well, I haven't checked the links that poppysue has, but you could also use an old wooden ladder; just the steps part, laying flat on the ground and then plant your herbs between each step.

It may sound wacky, but my herb garden is planted in discarded toilet tanks that we picked up from the side of the road. They have drainage holes in the bottom, are all about the same color, size, and shape and deep enough to prevent escape by most of the 'spreaders'. The tanks are arranged around a 10 ft by 12 ft area that encloses my butterfly garden. Inside has a walkway made from flat stones and thin concrete we also picked up off the roadsides. My kids know that anything growing in a tank is OK to eat and they love to graze, especially the mints. I used to keep all my bulbs in an abandoned claw foot bathtub on the other side of the yard until someone bought it from me for $300!

Thank You All!!! Great Ideas, Every One of them!

This is what is great about DG...just "ask and ye shall receive".

My gratitude and "hugs"..... Hedy :-))
