For those of you that have never seen a Native Azalea here is one in my yard. Theses Azaleas grow wild here in the south and they come in may colors.
Native Azalea
STUNNING!!!How far north are they hardy?
Rooty,
I don't know...maybe you can find out on google.
That is Amazing!I have a shady area that I have been saving for Azalias and Rhodes, this is one I am going to put high on my list!
Rooty,
This one is planted in 100% sun...I do have one that I got from Gingerlily that I will be planting in shade just to see what it does.
Holy Smokes,I just saw your vine pic on CCs thread, that is impressive!!!
We have these here in zone 7b, I have several very old ones in the woods mostly in shade. We saw many colors of these along the road in Calloway Gardens last year. I love them. They are also called Peidmont Azaleas.

Beautiful pictures Gloria. The winds are hard on them up here or I would try again.
Rooty,
Isn't that a vine and a half? I took that picture at Balboa Park in San Diego last year. I wishied I could get mine to grow that nice here but it won't take our few freezes.
Azalea,
I have a friend that grafts and grows them...every color you can imagine. Here is a picture of a small yellow/gold one that my friend had just planted.
Just as pretty!! We have the pink ones like yours in the woods by our house, I also had a Gold "Exbury" for a few years, but last year it died.
Glory, Do you know how to root these azaleas? I have a pink one from Gingerlily, and I bought a yellow one and an oragne one from Mobile, so if you know how to root them, I will give it a try and send some to whoever wants them. I have looked a long time for these azaleas. Also, I have some encore azaleas that I got last year; they really do bloom two times, spring and fall. Maybe we need to root some of them too.
You really really need to root some of all of them. I am very interested in trading for some.I know you can do it Roz.
Busybee, I will surely try.
John, Marie and I got two Rhodes from the Mobile flea market, and the man that sold them to us said they would live here, and so far, so good.
Roz,
I have never tried to root these Azaleas. I know the best time for rooting Azaleas is supposed to be July. I have better luck getting Azaleas to root by just bending a branch down on the ground and putting a brick on top and let it self root.
Beautiful pictures! I absolutely love native Azaleas!!! I have only hybrids currently, but I know that Piedmont Azaleas will grow very well on the East Coast, as well as, the Deep South.
Besides their beautiful flowers, I also love the added bonus that many native Azaleas are fragrant too!
More gardeners need to become more aware of these beauties and incorporate them into their shade gardens!
RootDoctor - I would run a search on Goggle under "Native Azaleas", because there are MANY different varieities & colors available in different areas of the U.S.
These are just beautiful! I love them!
Kell,
Where have you been?
obviously not on the right forum, Glory!!! LOL
I have never rooted any, but I will give it a try. I dug those pink ones in the woods. Mine are a single trunk and have not spread any. I do have a gorgeous golden/yellow that I will try to root too.
Glory, do you prune that one in the picture? I have never seen such a close mass of blooms on a native azalea. I would suggest to folks not to plant them in deep shade as they will get taller and gangly and not be as pretty as Glory's picture is. They will be stretching for light and probably not have as many blooms. This is the way they are in the deep woods, but those that you find in a sunnier location are usually bushier and have more blooms. Some shade is okay. Mine don't get afternoon sun (not on purpose, just happened to be where I planted them many years ago).
Not the best pic, but here's one of the yellow I have.
Gingerlily,
No I have never pruned it...poor thing.... it's really lucky to be alive. The one I got from you at the plant swap died. :(
Don't forget your Brug I have for you the next time y'all are this way.
Hi Kell. 4 more days till S. Day...little scared here.
I'm sorry it died. They had been dug a week or two, sure thought they would be okay. Will try to remember to bring another when I come to Biloxi in June.
You are tough Glory......you can take it! Or be a wimp like me and tell them you believe in lots and lots of drugs.............. and spend the next week in LA LA land............ actually that sounds good to me right now! LOL
Glory, I'll be thinking about you and will say a little prayer that all will be okay. Hang in there.
Good luck with your surgery, Glory.
Thanks Y'all....I'm sure I'll be fine.
I'm in your cheering section Glory!
I just know everything will be OK!
Update,
Things have changed since yesterday....no surgery on Friday...must have a biopsy done on Friday on a bone in my back. Will update later....getting to sound like a soap opera.
Is this a good thing or a bad thing????
CC
Not sure...if the back test potisive there will be no surgery...still waiting and wondering on the answer.
Gloria,
Let us know what you find out, Va and I are thinking about you.
