Ida came back

I thought I lost this one, but in February she suddenly started to shoot again. Here is one barelaid root.

... and the sadly rests of the stem ... another surprise was, that the soots didn`t come from the outer stem, but from between the bark and the core ...

That was about 14 days later ...

... and soon after that ...

... and that is how she looks today. About 25 larger or smaller shoots that are stumbling over each other eager to grow. Plenty material to cut from later on. I will never risk not to have a back up for her again :)

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Tonny, so glad Ida came back for you . . it is a beauty and one I wish we had here.

Co.Wicklow, Ireland(Zone 8b)

Yeah, it's really interesting where the shoots originated from! Glad it came back for you! Mine is still small but has a big fat flower bud on it!

Its about bedtime now, so I will have to return and reply tomorrow :)

I consider to go back to her old name "Ida of Sorø" *lol* We have the Canadian press running around in Sorø asking qusetions about a missing Irakian General that was in house arrest in his apartment just across my old supermarked, but now has left, so Sorø will soon we worldwide known for that. However I think the city deserves to be known for something nice as well. If you could just imagine walking in the forrests and the lakes and saying hi and chat with people that you never even have met before. That is the spirit of that town and I think it should be remembered that way :)

Wow! Pretty one.

Thanks Hibiscus and thanks to all of you :) Well, I have learned to take back-ups now. When I discussed it with Lene and told her I wanted one back-up for every Brug, she just smiled and added "No three!" Well, I know how the story goes about the man that knew where the closet should stand *lol* ... so she was naturally right ... and she was ... *lol* She still will be, when we have to find a place to overwinter all those (JK) :D

btw. its re-tagging time for all of you that have Ida. We decided to return to the original name "Ida of Sorø". I will send an official announcement out to BGI, ABADS and other important organisations, that has her in their registries. I thank you in advance for your kindness and understanding :)

Here`s a bad picture taken of her on her original stem. 2.5 meters tall in the old greenhouse. Its not fully sharp as it was taken as a snapshot from my old analoge camcorder, but man, she was loaded with fruits that summer and tall like a giant.

Bet you're relieved that she made it! It looks like she'll be bigger and better than ever.

Thanks for your encouraging words, Sue. Freezing down has really brought the best out in her. The last days she has been growing with an incredible speed. A few weeks ago only one sucker was taking lead, but now there are four of them. Do you think there will come something good out of keeping her in the winter garden this season?

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I bet there's lots of good to come from her!! I got a second bloom on my arborea. The first one I pollinated with Kell's sang pollen but it didn't take. This one I pollinated with it's own pollen. Keeping my fingers crossed. I want a pod!

city?? lol sticks, AR(Zone 7a)

I dont know what was sweeter---the bloom in your post Tonny or how you praised your wife:) wish DH and I had a shared interest in gardening.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Sue, my first 2 blooms did not take but now my 3rd took!!! A pod is forming!

Co.Wicklow, Ireland(Zone 8b)

I like the name change Tonny! Just out of curiosity, what is the Danish for the word "of" ?

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Tonny, I am so glad that "Ida of Sorø" has come back for you. I have a feeling that it will be beautiful and full of blooms this year.

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

Sue, arborea is prominent to take its own pollen, but I had problems with sanguinea pollen as well. I am sure there is a trick to make it work. If I come on something I will send you a note. Are the selfed pod growing?

Cheryl. I think Lene is as Brugcrazy as we all are and its wonderful that we share that passion. I am really lucky that she is and I wish that everyone here that they have a DH or DW and DF to share this interest with and for all kind of gardening as well.

Kell, how did you make it take? The arboreas here played me the same trick as they played Sue. Congrats with the growing pod :)

Thanks, Bruno. I use "of" like from ... from Sorø ... of Sorø ... which one is the correct to express that the hybrid originated in Sorø? *lol* I am glad that I didn`t have time to mail out the official announcement *lol*'lol* I have very big ears to catch hints here *lol* A bit red, but still learning too :D

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

Frannie, I hope so. She has around 20 suckers and several are competing to take lead to grow the tallest. I think of letting all these stems be on the plant. As I am getting used to after these years growing it each of the stems will form several new large suckers as well that could be used for cuttings. Has your season started yet in Texas. I know only Texas from reading up on Datura environments and I have come to think that you can grow them all year around without any interruptions *lol*

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Congrats Kell! I'll keep trying. Not sure if the one I selfed has taken ... it's too soon to tell.

Co.Wicklow, Ireland(Zone 8b)

Oh, sorry Tonny for confusing you! You're correct!

I just thought it might be nice to know the Danish for the word "of" so i could say Ida of Sorø in danish. LOL

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

*lol*lol* "Ida fra Sorø" Its the word fra. Funny way of spelling from, huh, but there are sure emythological similarieties and maybe a link between the two words from and fra, when you go back to the middleage or earlier *lol* Yes, but it confused me a bit. The word of is the same as the Danish af and we use af about royal family members etc. Like the (royal) Queen of (af) Denmark and (just common) Ida from (fra) Sorø *lol* btw. how did you like the Danish "Ida fra Sorø"? Sounds pretty odd, don`t it :) ?

Co.Wicklow, Ireland(Zone 8b)

No..I really like it! If you say Ida of Sorø...some people might think you mean Ida of Sorrow = Ida of Sadness LOL

Hmmm...let me see, Ida of Sorø or Ida fra Sorø ?

Actually...I think I like both of them LOLOLOL

Maybe you should stay with your original decision! LOL

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

*lol* It was even worse, when I put my middle name Surrow into googles search line *lol*lol* There was an Island with a city of the same name, the rest of the hundreds of links was a sad story *lol*lol* I want a new name :D Ha, ha, ha :D

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Here is my new pod........ if it survives it will be Arborea X orange sang. So does anyone know what I may get from such a combination?

Thumbnail by Kell
Co.Wicklow, Ireland(Zone 8b)

You get allot of new friends wanting seeds, Kell...LOL
Can't wait to see the babies! whatever you do, don't repot it untill you've picked the pod! Best of luck..I hope you get some beauties!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Bruno!
So why can't I repot it? I was going to do so this weekend in fact. It is in a small pot, maybe 2 or 3 gallon. It is drying out daily now. I also have let it lean over to the side so it will shoot up lots of new side shoots along the stem. I am debating whether I should stake it straight up while I still can and forget all the side growth. I just have friends that want pieces so I was trying to get it to do side shoot for me.

Co.Wicklow, Ireland(Zone 8b)

In my own experience, sometimes repotting can cause seed pods to abort and after a few days they fall off! None of my pods ever dropped of from drought! Have you got a tray to go underneath the pot. When you water, this will hold some water too and stop the soil drying out so quickly!

Kell, you'll get a flava. Cool. My arborea x sang took 4 months to ripen. They're growing now. Be fun to compare plants.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

oh.......4 months? I really need to repot it. do you think if I repot it now it will be ok? I have another 6 blooms pollinated and I do not know if they took yet. I have tons of buds......... I may chance it. it needs a new pot. If it drops hopefully I will get another to take.

so are all your seedlings growing now or have some flowered Jeanne?

I just planted them a month ago Kell, so no flowers yet.

Carefully repot it but take care not to knock the seed pod off. It should be fine.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Kell,Don't repot it,IMHO.I agree with Bruno and Tonny.(AA)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What does AA mean Root? LOL! If I repot it,it will be my luck that it will drop off and I will never be able to get another one to take! If I do not repot it, I will inevitably let it dry out and the bud will fall off that way. My goose is cooked.

Thanks Jeanne.............. I can't wait to see what you get. too exciting. does Miss Lizzy have any flavas growing?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

kell, put the pot in a bucket with some water maybe.....

Not drowning it but enough to wick some moisture up to it or stick the whole pot in the soil so it doesent dry out as fast till the pod rippens.....

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

that is a good idea CC!
