I read a story that President Abe Lincoln's mother died after drinking milk from a cow that ate white snake root. Believe it, or not.

Nevertheless I like this plant in my woodland landscape. It tolerates deep shade and provides much needed 'floral light' in these shady locations. In addition the purple variety (e. rugosa) provides additional foliage color.

I can only hope the cow also died because that might help control my deer problem. Nothing else seems to do it for long. I struggle to find attractive and toxic plants now. Rather than designing for the usual goals, I just want something besides garlic mustard that survives deer and rabbits.

Just how poisonous is this plant? I just planted two, and now I worry about my dogs.
What happens if they take a bite out of a leaf? Can anyone tell me more about it?

Goodview, MN

Somebody had mentioned that it was poisonous aren't alot of plants the same. Angel Trumphet, Castor Bean, Holly some others that you would not think that were?
