Looking for a weeping cherry tree and care advice

Chicago, IL(Zone 6a)

Hi:

I am new to this forum, but I saw a beautiful weeping cherry tree at the Home and Garden Show in Chicago. I live in the city and have a small yard with sun mostly from the north and south. Can a weeping cherry tree be grown in Chicago successfully and can it be pruned to remain small? Also if anyone has any seedlings or know where I can find one, I would be willing to pay.

Thanks for any help!

I am in Lima, Ohio. Have had the pink weeping cherry for over 5 years. Would have to try and start a cutting now for you.

Pretty sure these are grafted for the weeping effect; might not be possible from seedlings or cuttings. Very beautiful, but the blooming period here in NJ is about 3 days. Still, a very attractive small tree.

Anne, what is your zone there in Chicago? Might want to add that to your member profile, can be helpful as far as hardiness of plants and so on.

Also, if I am correct about this being a grafted tree, the height will be established by the graft, so pruning would not matter in that regard.

Hope you find one!

Thank you for all your replies. Hibiscus, I would appreciate a cutting, what would you want for it? I am in zone 5b.

I thought you might be close to Limas' zone 5.

Let me try and start some this spring under jars outside.
Will let you know how it goes, will do my best.

I have a weeping cherry tree and get many seedlings, the ones that I have allowed to mature (potted up and given to neighbours) have done the weeping thing, which baffles me, as I always thought they were grafted. some of them come up straight, and some weep. It is the oddest thing ever.
Hibiscus, have you had many volunteers? seems I get tons of them, and have sent quite a few of them to people.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

No, no volunteers, we keep the bottom of the trunk, free from grass/weeds, with mulch. But I did have to trim lots last summer, as they were hanging on the ground, with the weeping.

Pebble, is yours' pink? I have seen the white weeping ones.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)
