How does fish emulsion stack up as a brug fertilizer? Am I better off staying with Miracle Grow? Is there something better? I put some Osmocote in the pots with my brugs last summer, and there is still some sitting on top of the pots....is it sposed to dissolve? I scratched it in as best as I could when I put it in. Re: the fish emulsion.........if it is good for brugs, what is the ratio? More than the label reads for potted plants? TIA. I want the biggest, bestest blooming brugs in my area!
Fish Emulsion as fertilizer?
Year before last a lot of members were using the fish emulsion and we posted a lot about it. I didn't read any postings last year where any one was singing it's praises. I didn't use it last year but used cow manure about every 4 days. I just applied a hand ful or two and watered in around the roots. Had much more success last year. Monica says in her book that the osmose coat is not recommended because it is slow releasing. I did use it last year but with the cow manure. She also says to use water solvable fertilizer with a nitrogen content at least 14%. I hope this helps you have the best blooms and the prettiest in your area. Jim
I can't tell you about its efficacy on brugs, but I have two words for fish emulsion: peeeee yewwwww! (Even the so-called "deodorized version" is very fishy-smelling.)
Anna, you have monikas book, right? what she uses is similar to Miracle Grow.
I have used fish emulsion and it is 1. messy, 2. stinky, and 3. draws flies! Plus, I couldn't tell that I got a better result than regular use of Miracle grow.
This year, I bought pelleted chicken manure to use in my beds for my in-ground brugs. Has anyone had a good result using this?
I found Peters last night at Lowes and they've put in micronutrients. I don't have the rundown yet on what they are, big bag is outside. Here is the breakdown as much as I can find: http://216.239.51.100/search?q=cache:A183-x-f4kcC:florawww.eeb.uconn.edu/msds/peters_202020_msds.pdf+Peters+plant+food&hl=en&ie=UTF-8
Anna, Don't use it in your GH. Not only will the heat cause it to stink but it will mess up your potting soil.
I can't use it here. I tried it outside last year and even though I bought the kind that was deoderized it drew a bear to one of my Brugs and he dug around and damaged the roots looking for that "dead fish". I use MG or Peter's with good results.
hehehe, I bet he was ticked he didn't find anything!!!
Just curious.........define "mess up your potting soil''. Make it sticky and yucky? I was told it goes good things for ferns, so I can do it when they are outside. No problem there. The stink can dissipate in the great outdoors.
Someone here last year used it in their GH and said they had to repot their plants. I think it made the soil either moldy with the heat or gooey. I can't remember who it was but maybe they will jump in here. I do know it smells terrible in the heat.
