I have a mix of smaller-size cannas planted in a shady spot in my garden, and they are not doing well. Blooms are few and tend to topple over, and the leaves are brownish and chewed. Any suggestions on how to moved them? Do they perhaps need to be separated into smaller clumps?
Thanks,
Olga
Cannas do not like their home
I'd separate them and move them to sun. Have you got leaf-roller caterpillars?
are they too dry? just another thought. Mine get a fair amount because of what else is in the bed with them.
Yes, full sun would be best. If the plants are healthier, perhaps there will be no browning of the leaves. The only one I know which prefers some shaded is 'Stuttgart'; in full sun the variegated leaves will turn brown. They should be easy enough to move, just dig up the rhizomes- divide if you think they are too crowded. Are these named varieties?
Well, one of them I received from a garden friend a while back, it has yellow flowers with red speckles, while the other variety I grew from seed labeled "dwarf red canna", so I don't know the specific cultivars, but they sure are nice when they bloom (which they have not done since replanting them to this area).
Thanks to everyone for your help.
Regards,
Olga
