I've been bit by the iris bug. Thought I'd see how this would go over. Since iris are easy to ship and will last indefinitely out of the soil - I think they'd be a good choice for a pot luck trade. Every gardener seems to have a few un-named iris in their gardens. If there's enough interest I'd host the trade.
We could just draw names and do a surprise trade - or I was thinking a "pot luck" type of trade would be fun to try. If I could get all the participants to send 2 rhizomes of 3 different iris (that would be 6 rhizomes per person) - I'll send you 6 rhizomes back of six different iris. Do you think it would work out Ok? To make it clear we'd stick to bearded iris - they could be tall, intermediate, or dwarf & named or un-named. What you received back would be strictly pot-luck.
I was thinking late August would be a good time since they should be divided & planted in the fall. Let me know what you all think before I try to work out any details. If there's enough members interested I'll make a separate post to sign up.
Pot-Luck Iris Trade?
Poppysue, I'd be interested. I have gobs of bearded Iris, and had hoped to at least tag them by color this summer. However, since many were moved last summer, only less than half have bloomed, and I hane no record of names since these have been in the family for years.
Hi Poppysue, count me in!
I'm in too! Just let me know the info. By the way poppysue the plants you sent are doing great!!!!!! THANKS AGAIN!!!! sue
WAIT!!
DUH! I was just getting ready for bed and realized - this is not such a great idea. I would have to get the postage to mail the iris to you - other wise I'd have to foot the postage myself. I like to be a generous trader but not that generous :o) ~ So... that would be almost 8 bucks it would cost everyone. ~ 6 rhizomes for $8 is still a good deal but I don't think it's a great deal especially if you're not sure about what your getting. We'd have to do this in another way. A "secret iris trade" is the best I can think of. Where you'd be given a name to send your rhizomes to. Anyone have any better ideas?

I would be very interested but unfortunately i only have three types of iris. Would anyone consider a secret bulb/rhizome trade...those i have a host of
Sandy
consider this
daylilies
elephant ears
tulips
orchidiola
gladiols
ranunculus
cannas
patchwork petals
amarylis
mini amarylis
and so on
Sandy...just food for thought.Perhaps the fall might be good time also so everything people have aquired that is new can accurately be labeled and identified
Sandy, you and I are always on the same page, aren't we:) LOL!!! I like your idea, my irises have already bloomed, I moved them, and won't know what they are until next year, but I do have other nice bulbs to trade.

I'll give this a try. I only have three different kinds of irises left to do any trading with. So if that's O.K. then count me in. Tonia
Count me in whatever you decide to do.
Paul
Sounds fun. Let me know what to do. I have mostly iris, but could trade some daffodils too.
i don't have 3 kinds of irises i have a lot of just one. have been sending it off all year and there's still a bunch left. if anyone would be willing to trade for 6 rhizomes of one kind that would be great. major bug. i'm just infested. been trying get some. went on a walk saw some incredable ones finally got the nerve to go ask for a trade. found out that she was a local artist and taught pottery. stayed for a lesson instead of getting irises. maybe later in the fall:o)
anyhow point of story, i would love to get some new varieties. would anyone be willing?
