At the expense of seeming less than intelligent,is not fall the time to plant crocus, daff, tulip and the like? I keep seeing the bulbs at Wallmart etc, and thought it was the wrong time of year to plant them. Can one plant them in the spring, with any degree of sucess?
bulbs when to plant?
skyeblu, you are right, fall is the time for planting those spring bulbs. In your area, crocus and other 'minor' bulbs can be planted in September, daffodils in October, and tulips in November. Don't waste time and effort with those stale bulbs at any price! Even those purchased in bloom...they can be planted afterwards, but much of the strength of the bulb has been expended in 'forcing' them into bloom.
It is not good for the bulb industry if there are still Fall bulbs for sale. It should be brought to the attention of the company that sells to these stores. The salespeople ought to have taken them away from the display area. You only get unhappy customers because they will not perform. There ought to be a "Sell By" date on the packages.
