Very pretty! I like the little blue flowers. Are they a small water lily?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

beautiful Kyle!!! tell us how to grow EE's in water, everytime I try it rots. which ones are those?

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

EE's??

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

elephant ears, sorry

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

Oh...well now...that makes sense. duh....dummy me... :)

I still want to know what the little blue flowers are. They're so cute!!

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Sledder the taller plants with the small blue flowers are ruellia brittoniana,Mexican petunias.Easy to grow but a pest species in warmer climates. They spread quickly by seeds.
tig..use only colocasias..and start out by keeping them well watered in pots before putting into the pool. They have to re-adjust to being put into water..can take a few weeks before they take off.Mine multiply faster in water then in pots on land. :-) And feed feed feed!

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Mexican petunias in water too? Any special trick there?

Luv your pond!

Hobart, IN(Zone 5a)

You are making me drool, I can't wait for warmer weather. Your colocasias look great, everything looks great. I have not yet succeeded growing them in the pond itself, they ended up getting there own bog.

Orlando, FL(Zone 9b)

VB, the grassy looking plant is the mexican petunia but there is also a blue water lily to the right of it. It sure looks like var. "Colorado Blue" to me.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

The blue waterlilies were,Dauben, caerulea,Director Moore, and Tina. Not all were in bloom the day I took the pic.
the dark one was Director Moore heres a closer pic.

Eclipse, your pond is beautiful, and so lush looking. But why do you have to drain it. I live in zone 5 a or b. If your pond is 3000 gal. it must be at least 2 feet deep. I know you can't leave a lot of those plants outside for the winter. My largest pond is 30" in deepest areas, with ledges of different depths... I leave all the water lilies out for the winter in the deep area. I don't have any tropical ones. The tender plants I either don't try to carry over of put in the large old sink in my greenhouse. My large pool hasn't been drained since we built it 6 years ago. The smaller one has been drained a couple of times and will have to siphoned out again in a week or two. I don't have any fish in the small one it is for my frogs and toads.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Rutholive..the pool is square with straight up and down sides. The ice would crack the corners. So I drain it. The hardy waterlilies get dried out and then kept just moist for storage under a bench in the cool greenhouse, the tropicals get dried down some too and put in a cool greenhouse.they go dormant till spring.then in may all the plants go back outside. The tropical lilies will go out the first of June. :-)

Kyle, thanks so much for the great info as usual!! I want your pond, but if I can't have it, I'll try to at least get the look here:)
ps, is Black Marble a colocasia?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

tiG,
Black marble is a sport of Black Magic. Both have the same needs. :-)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Kyle, are your EE's fully immersed or are the pots set on something to keep them only halfway in the water?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

tiG..you should only have 2" of water over the soil surface..any deeper and they may die.In the wild taros (EE's) grow at the waters edge..not submerged.Mine at work are on bricks to raise them to the correct depth. :-)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

thanks! I wasn't sure whether to put half the pot in, just cover or what. Thanks tons!!! (now to see if I can really do it:)

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Don't forget the pond tabs. :-)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)
