This is Ipheion uniflorum 'Charlotte Bishop'
I love the blue ones, but this has a charm of its own
Ipheion with a difference
jus' loverly.
glad you are calling them by their real name ;-)
What other name is there?
:O
He probably won't tell us. You know how Mark is about things like this ;~)
Adam.
Pretty little bulb Philomel.
My Mom reported that my uncle has the blue flowering in his garden. He called them, blue flowering bulb plant things *G*. He's like my Mom, all his fingers are definitely green, pity it skipped a generation ;)
You reckon you can name them and not grow them and they can grow but not name? Even from this distance I can tell your fingers are bright green Baa - so which generation are you referring to LOL?
Adam, philomel is the same about things like this LOL ;-)
iffyons! LOL
Star flower is definitely not as nice as Ipheion. Until recently I didnt know they had a common name
So, back in October I planted about 50 Ipheion, Wisley Blue, in my plot. Almost immediately they put up some foliage that looks exactly like the leaves in the background of Philomel's photo, above.
The foliage stayed green throughout the winter and has not grown much since the weather warmed.
As an experiment, I took up one bulb today. It had healthy roots (seemed to this inexperienced eye extensive for the small size of the bulb), and is plump, not rotted.
The printed name stake that came with the bulbs says April flowers in my zone.
Is it normal for these plants to leaf out so soon (so long before flowering), etc?
Adam.

And they multiply extensively too.
Yes, and if they like you you've gottem for keeps
Wisley Blue's my favourite :)
Mmm I didn't know they had a 'common' name til I popped this one in the PDB. So what's common about that?
Definitely Iffyons!
;)
Philomel
They get away with a lot plant wise, the plants just seem eager to please them. Me? I have lots of pots full of weedy, weak plants that give a great impression of barely hanging on to life.
Ulrich said these have a scent, RHS agrees, any reports on that?
Aotearoa
Yep that's normal from what I've seen in other peoples gardens.
I'll go and have a sniff later Baa and report back :)
I grow the common species light blue here. (SE Pennsylvania) but they are shy bloomers for me. They grow and multiply into large clumps with the very persistant foliage but very few flowers. They have even naturalized over some areas by seed. I think this pink form is very attractive but doubt it is available in the US.
Oh dear Baa, forgot to sniff and now it's gone :(
You may find one in a catalogue somewhere Geoforce - good luck :)
