Ginger info

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

So many of yall purchased gingers this year! Yahooo, ginger fever spreads...*grin*. With so many different kinds of gingers, they all have different sun requirments so I posted this in case anyone might be wondering where to put these beauties:

Alpinias: like the sun, but should be protected from direct mid day sun.

Hedychiums: they are tolerant of wet soils and need lots of sun to bloom. They can go in full sun

Curcumas: like sun, in zone 9 they should be protected from hot evening sun, they will do well in filtered evening sun.

Globbas: will do okay with filtered A.M. sun, they can't tolerate hot sun.

Kaempferias: they like the shade

Zingibers: do well in med sun

what if I have some I don't know what they are?? (ps, what is Elizabeth)

Lappeenranta, Finland(Zone 3a)

I sowed my ginger few days ago..........just hoping the best..........maybe we will see some flowers on middle summer....it never know.

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

tiG, Elizabeth is a Hedychium.

Mitjo,it depends what kind of ginger seed you sowed. Some gingers, such as Alpinia, bloom on last years growth. Good luck with your seeds!

Mitjo, it might take some time for these to bloom..do you have a green house?

tiG, if you have some photos of the unknown gingers, I might be able to help you id them, at least tell you what family they are in. If you want, you can email me some pics of them. I'll do what I can.

they are mostly still dormant, guess I need to bring them out, huh??

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

tiG,most of my gingers are just starting to pop up now. I have been enjoying walking in the garden seeing new signs of life everyday. They are just peeking out of the ground. Some Kaempferias will send up lovely flowers http://davesgarden.com/t/263328/ before the foliage even starts to come out.

I use the same kind of Ginger as Mitjo...I cut it into pieces and planted it...Now it is about 8 inches high ...how long will it take it to bloom????

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

Hi Chamma, I suppose it all depends on the cilmate. My gingers all start blooming in about mid summer.

Lappeenranta, Finland(Zone 3a)
