Ricinus communis 'Zanzibariensis' I'm not sure on this one, this plant should not have red in it.

communis zanzibariensis. (10,h) RIC-1Z.
'ZANZIBAR BIG-LEAF CASTOR BEAN'. The largest leaves of all, bright green with white veins, up to 3 feet across. No red. Huge plant to 15 feet or more.

I wondered the same thing...anyone know enough about Zanzibarensis to know if this is it?

Hey, Johnny's Select Seeds has a great pic of it.. I went on their site and this is their comment/quote on the plant. I haven't grown this particular castor yet but it does mention red in their quote below.

"New! A green castor bean to round out our offerings.
The magnificent size alone makes this a wonderful plant to grow. Standing at 8-11' with umbrella-sized leaves, it makes for a truly tropical looking addition to a garden. Can also be grown in large containers for an exotic effect. Great for use as an annual hedge or to provide shade to the side of a building. Mostly green with small percentage of red. CAUTION: Seeds are poisonous. Exercise caution around children and pets. "

Terry, speaking of Johnny's, any idea when they might be added to Plantscout? They and Pinetree are my two main sources for seeds.

Other than DG of course!

You might tell them just that to give 'em a nudge. (You'd be amazed how much influence customers can have on business decisions.) Both Johnny's and Pinetree have corresponded with us about signing up, but that's about all I can tell you. We'd love to have both of them participating because of their wide variety of products and high GWD ratings.

In fact, that goes for all the GWD Top Twenty companies and others that are close-to-top-twenty status. If any highly-rated company is among your top favorite vendors, you can email them and encourage them to participate ;o)

Done!! Hopefully they will join in! Quick too b/c it's time to start planning/day dreaming about next Spring!!!

Sssshhh!!! You being in zone 7b, that kind of talk will get you tarred and feathered by those poor souls in zones 2 thru 5. Of course, they really only get cranky when late January/February comes around and we can start puttering around outside while they're still snowbound ;o)

Hee hee! Any plants I actually buy - trees, perennials, etc I like to also plant in the fall! Makes for TWO hyper-hobby seasons! I love it!! You probably have the same advantages!!!! Plant seedlings in Spring and plants in the fall! I have also planted the trees I got for Christmas is Dec/Jan as well.

Of course thanks to the wonderful weather here we are in the midst of tornado watches right now from Ivan... Can't have it all I suppose!

for all of you wondering about the zanzibarens plant their are 3 different type of this plant thay have verry large leaves , giant stalk and yes one of them does have red stalk. look at the bright green one, all of their seeds are black so if the plant seeds are not marked you could have one of three zanzibarens
