Lavender Germination Time?

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

I've been trying to germinate some lavender. Nothing yet. Does it need a lengthy germination period before it will sprout?

Madison, WI(Zone 5a)

Lavender is a lot like Rosemary in that it's rather difficult to start from seed. It can be done, but it takes quite a long time, patience, and numerous seeds until you get one that wants to sprout. Cuttings are definitely better if you want to grow lavender.

Morph, did you trade for them or buy them? If you traded for them, they probably just need a cold treatment. Usually store ones have been treated.

These seeds were purchased last year. Nothing yet... I'm keeping them moist and under the lights.

How long have you been waiting? If there is nothing else in with them, you may want to put them outside or in the fridge. With our nights still going to the 40s they may just surprise you and pop up quicker. Hey, you wouldn't have to harden them off either. LOL

Great idea ~ truly! I've two small containers of them so I'll try it with the one to see what results I get.

Hey, I want to show you some pictures I took today. I've been weeding and cleaning up the garden area around my fence.

I am just so amazed that what you gave me last year looks like it is going to return this year!!! What an awesome gift, Girl ~ I can never thank you enough!

On another thread about identification, I found that my Sea Holly probably made it through to this year. I'm hoping it will bloom. But, I've too many of these packed together so if you're interested let me know.
Also, from the Cleome you think you didn't give me, I am going to grow some seedlings. It was beautiful and propogated so many seeds! I think it was just a seed that may have been in your garden when you dug up stuff for me. I didn't plant Cleome and didn't even know what it was until someone told me. I had just the one plant, but it was gorgeous ~ even DH & DS noticed it as being spectacular!

Anyway, I want to give some and some Sea Holly too, if you are interested in that :)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Awww Deb! I am so happy the plants did well for you. :) It was neat to be able to drop by and surprise you with the plants! I hated the idea of putting them into a box and mailing them when you were only an hour away. I swear to you that Cleome has never grown on my property! LOL It doesn't like me. I have tried several times to get it to grow but alas the seeds never sprout! Maybe one fickle seed did take a ride with the plants I brought you. AND apparently it liked you more than me. heeee heee I'll probably have more goodies for you this year. :)

Most sources say that Lavender seed quickly loses viability; it must be sown fresh. I have never tried it from seed, though.

Hi, I've sown Lavendula in april 2002. Probably they need a long time to germinate and seeds germinata very unregulary. Only two seeds germinated in three weeks and than germinating stopped...nada.. Left it in a cold frame whole winter..to be honest I've forgotten them.. and..voila a whole bunch of little Lavendulaplants I've discovered this morning:)

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Mmmmmm.... Sounds like that's the ticket. To be clear, a cold frame is like what?

I finally had 2 seeds finally ~ argh!

Horn, Netherlands(Zone 8b)

Hi Morph, I call a cold frame the frame outside where I keep the hardy seeds to germinate. It's only covered by a piece of glass and is offcourse unheated.

Saya, do you let it get sun at all? If so, most of the day or just a certain amount of light per day? I think I need one of these for some other varieties of seeds I'm attempting to germinate.

Thanks!

Here are some examples of cold frames

Thanks, Lavanda!!! Well, I have an Odd Lots greenhouse just like the one in your picture! Maybe I should use that for this? Thanks :)

Mcallen, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, it would work !

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

I was thinking about growing some Lavender this winter but after reading this post guess I'll change my mind about that. Seeds are too expensive to buy if they are hard to germinate :(

I moderate a lavender-plant list if anyone would be interested in joining it. About growing, cooking and crafting with lavender.

It is full of growers of lavender from around the world.

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

I may be, Lavanda :) My interest would be for use in homemade soap...

Jacksonville, IL(Zone 5a)

I would be interested in the lavender group also. Do you have a web address?

Mcallen, TX(Zone 8a)

It is lavender-recipe@yahoogroups.com.

Go to http//www.yahoogroups.com.

And sign in. Then where it says "join a group" or "find a group" enter lavender-recipe.

Or email me and I can send you an invitation.

Love, Lavanda
