Need Black Bread Recipe

When visiting the East coast, we found black bread in the markets. It isn't available around here. Does anyone have a recipe for this bread? What we had was nearly black and very soft. Would appreciate any help you might be able to give me. I've taken recipes from the net, but not sure they are what I'm looking for. This bread we had was just a tiny bit more coarse than a slice of white bread. Thanks!!
