I just got some yellow oleander seeds (Thevetia Peruviana). I soaked it in a little cup of water, now what? I usually start things in a damp paper towel/baggie and pot them up when they sprout. Should I do that with this big sucker, or start it out in a pot? It has such a hard shell, and I don't know which end should be pointed up. Help!!
Starting Yellow Oleander seed
Hi Ronna,
Your seeds have a hard shell?? i was just getting around to getting some of my oleander seeds planted, but mine are like small little fluffy seeds?? Now i am wondering if i have the right seeds, it says pink Oleander seeds?hmmm think i will look it up on the database....
Tootsie, regular oleander is Nerium Oleander & the seeds are small with a puffy thing on one end (like a badminton thingy). This is a different plant. The common name is yellow oleander because the leaves look similar. It has a hard shell, bigger than a hazelnut, smaller than a walnut.
Ronna...and terribly poisonous too!Even more so then true oleanders. We grew these in San Diego.really neat trees. You might want to nick the seed coat. :-)
Thanks, Kyle, I knew that it is poisonous, what do I nick it with, a hammer? It's hard like a nut shell.
Ronna..use the edge of a metal file to nick the seed till you see white...it won't be easy!!LOL They have a very tough seed coat.soak after you nick it and plant covered with about 1/4 of an inch of soil mix and keep warm. :-)
For very tough seed coats (like palm seeds), my D.H.'s handy-dandy vice, comes in very handy. I put the seed in the vice, tighten up the winch and then either use a file or other cutting instrument to nick the seed. You'd be surprised how well this works! Then soak your nicked seed overnight until it swells up and plant as described above.
