unwanted cross pollination

Dripping Springs, TX

I there anyway to keep the unwanted pollination to a low level? How far apart? Are there certain brug varieties I should plant that I won't have that problem with? And I being a worry wart for nothing? (never really understood that saying) Glory sent you pictures of my dining room.

Pollinate the flower you want to pollinate, direct after opening, or open it. And close with adhesive tape...no unwanted pollination

I hadn't thought of tape. There is no chance of the whole thing rotting from the inside out?

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

I do this since years, was afraid rotting inside, too. Never it happened. All set good pots. The flower will fall down soon( with tape..) after pollination.

Ludger your the Brug MacGyver The tape idea is great. Until I get them pollinated how far a part should they be planted?

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

Sorry? Do you mean how far a part from the next brug? LOL, so far as a bee can fly........some miles.

When I see a flower is ready for opening,4oclock in noon, I open it, pollinate it and close it.......no chance to the bees.
I like to have much different brugs in my yard.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

A brilliant idea. This is what I'm going to do. Thank you. It beats covering it with pantyhose.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Swinging in the breeze? Funny.

Dripping Springs, TX

Swinging in the breeze? huh? Do you mean Liz without her pantyhose..lol Liz move to TX. It's too hot to wear pantyhose or almost anything else for that matter.

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

Grin...Liz you donīt mentioned pantyhose? did you?

Lol, I donīt use them.........if I had to buy or to beggg for such dessous..people would think I am crazy..

am crazy but not for pantyhose...lol..lol...lol

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Yes I did say pantyhose Ludger. LOL. That's what a lot of people do to keep the birds from taking seeds and to keep insects from doing your pollinating for you. During the summer there are a lot of angry women who have found that their husbands have cut up their last pair of pantyhose to cover the plants.LOLOL

Oh I do love this place! Who could imagine I'd get so many giggles over pollinating Brugs!

Mary

Ludger,
you are so smart but the flowers look like they have been in an auto accident. LOL I never thought of doing this. I normally just take a small piece of tin foil and wrap the stigma.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

what about taping a coffee filter over it,seems like it could still breath ,not sure what it would do when it rains......

FSH, TX

I personally just pull the whole flower off while the flower is still completly green/waxy looking and pollinate the stigma. Unless of course I also want pollen. I like your tape idea though Ludger. Very inventive and easy. I figure if there is no corolla, anthers, etc and only a stigma then the bees and the moths may leave just a single stigma alone. Of course, to be sure covering the stigma works as well, a great idea Glory. I try to only grow hybrids that I intend to hybridize with. I don't have any hybrids just for the sake of having them. That keeps me from making just willy nilly crosses and the bees for that matter as well. Although, I must admit I do tend to get a lot of seed pods from seedlings that are crossed to other seedlings while I am waiting to see if any of my seedlings have potential as the first flush is not always indicative of what that hybrid will yield in subsequent flushes.

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

Glory, I tried to cover only the stigma...with my big fingers I broke the stigma...itīs much easier to close the flower.
CC, how to fix the filter...? you will need tape again. I never have had problems with this method.

Liz, we use such "Hot Pants " to protect sunflowerseedpods, because birds steel them before winter.

Eric, your way sounds good, too. We have small black bugs when the brugs are flowering, I must protect each flower to make shure a controlled pollination.

Ludger,
I guess it would be a problem if you have large fingers...never thought of that. I have long skinny fingers...the rest of me is fat. LOL

I just picked two seed pods off my Species....NH Aurea Pink Hybrid and Old Glory. They didn't have a lot of seeds in either one...Aurea(40) and Old Glory(50). The seeds are nice and brown...the seed I opened had a nice embryo inside.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

(((she is NOT fat!!)))
congrats on the seeds, I bet you are very excited!

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

Glory, congrats on the seeds, sounds very special.
If you have long skinny fingers...the " rest " of you can not be f.. !

Anyway, I like you and your posts. In my eyes you are a really nice brugfriend! I am not watching the other stuff..
