lap top computers

I know absolutely nothing about lap top computers so will ask stupid questions which never bother me, only by not asking do you stay stupid. Do you have to have a home based computer besides the lap top or can you just buy a lap top that does everything? Which brands would some of you recommend. At the moment am looking at IBM and HP. Thanks for any comments and opinions.
