hi folks,
i have purchased a musa (banana) and 2 types of elephant ears. i would like to pot up one banana and one each of the elephant ears. i will need to transport them down a flight of stairs to the cellar for the winter. what size container do you suggest? and what mixture of soil or soilless mediums in the container. will make them happy? how about fertilizer?
thanks, debi z
its 60 degrees here today and yesterday too. spring is springing and the snow is melting.!!!!! i'm a happy woman.
what size containers
Are you going to carry the nana yourself? Is it a dwarf?
Those tubs with handles work great.....
it is a basjoo. the one for sale through tig's co-op. it is zone 4, but i would like to keep one outside through the winter and then one inside and dormant, just in case. i was at odd lots, and found 2 planters that had caster wheels built right into them. they are 15" diameter planters and quite deep. i don't believe i've seen any planters with handles. what are they made of? i've seen a few metal ones with handles but they are smaller.
i wonder if overwintering in the garage or shed would be good enough? what do you say?

you can dig them and just store the tuber. That way you don't have to worry about pot size.
tig,
thank you. i know that and plan on doing that with the e.ears that i plant in the ground. but i would like to do a container. if i can't, well no biggy. but i would like to try it that way, and then bring it out of dormancy earlier in the spring. all established in the dirt. i can't plant anything like this until june 1st, outdoors here. debi z
we invested in a hand truck last year and it was well worth the $30 or so. makes a lot of sense the way you want to do it, considering your zone.
that's a good idea. thanks tig
