:-( most of mine are over for this year.

this is a good example of elwesii var elwesii which has two marks sometimes joined my a line or just one large inner mark.

elwesii var monostictus has only one mark on the apex of the petal.

You know, Mark, before I started gardening I would have thought that an "obsession" with such a little flower bordered on the absurd. However, I'm beginning to see your point here. They really are wonderful pretty little things, and I hope to get a few more varieties and start a modest collection in my limited space.

so is this taller growing than nivalis?
Which ones get to 2'?

New York City, NY(Zone 6b)

I don't think this one gets that tall. The tallest elwesii in my plot is approximately 8 inches, about 20 cms. These were only planted in October, however, and may grow larger once they settle in.

Mark, your thoughts?

Mark ~~~

Now we know that the one that came up for me in mid~January was quite early, comparatively. It's leafed out nicely and seems vigorous.

When the foliage subsides, I'll dig it and pop it on over.

For the elwesii in my garden this is the peak week.

sorry for the delay - I wasnt watching the posts.

The 2 feet tall G elwesii was found in Turkey last year. G elwesii once settled tend to tower above G nivalis but only the wild type. Some cultivars of each can be be either very tall or very short. G elwesii have wider and more glaucous leaves. some forms of elwesii flower in November

I look forward to receiving your early G elwesii.

Mark, I'll promise to send you a bulb of our elwesiis this year.. And post better pics (than last year) of them when they start growing and flowering.

it's very strange how your snudrops are so late as parts of Finland are at the same latitude as Bonnie Scotland

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Yes but you have coastal climate, we have "väli-ilmasto", don't know how yo ucall it, "middle climate"? You know, in between the coastal and continental climates.

You don't even get cold there during winter, if you compare to us, and your winter is like our cold Autumn.

best you persuade your family to move to the UK. just think of all those plants you could grow! are you going to stay in Finland once you are through uni and become Dr Evert?

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

I'd still like to drink clean water and breath clean air ;) No, really I like it here, the long summer nights, snow (it's ok in the beginning, but in Spring it's annoying) etc.

Yes I think so, where would I move and why?

why not start a new post using your last line? it could end up fun. I'll answer there.

sorry that I distract you discussion, but I just want say one thing. I would have much trouble live place likes this in UK http://www.contours.co.uk/ but living place like this http://www.aoz.ethz.ch/archive/stuecke/images/liverpool.gif would not be fun at all.....there, where white birch butterflys are black...........and air is not good to breathe..

A lot of us can empathise with that Mitjo
