What is the normal color for cannas? I know there are pinks, yellow, oranges and reds, are these the normal colors and others are hybridized to produce variations in color?
If I cross pollen from a red with a yellow will I get orange? Help needed here!
canna color questions
joydie1, that would depend on whether the red had total dominance over the yellow, if so, seedlings would be red in the first generation, varied in the second. If incomplete dominance, you would get your orange. By normal colors, I imagine that means any color found in a species of canna, as opposed to crosses of the species, and further hybrids.
I love the 'wild hairs' over what is supposed to be ... lol
Thanks Pardancanda.
You're welcome, joydie1.
Abutilon, there is a lot Mendel never knew...yes?
I posed this question because I'm more familiar with the hybridization patterns of brugs and daylilies, but have no knowledge about canna and was wondering.
John,
I just sowed some of my white canna seeds.
All have come up green as the parents except for one seedling.
My 'wild hair' (o:
Hoping ...
Mendel is out the window here. lol
Oh, what Mendel never knew...good thing though, or he would never have accomplished what he did...
i didn't understand half of this post. what are 'wild hairs'? and was mendel a hybridizer of canna's?
need to have my learning today. :o)

Abutilon,
That flower must have had bees or butterflies pollinating in there somewhere...lol. It will be interesting to see the color of the offspring...
debi_z, honestly, I never heard of 'wild hairs' either, but am guessing it means something like a 'wild card'? Something unexpected?? Abutilon will have to let us know!
Mendel did experiments with heredity in plants, including the famous one using smooth and wrinkled peas. I don't know if he ever grew cannas.
