I NEED HELP MODEM NOT DETECTING DIAL TONE???

I thought my computer got hit by lightning and was saved, but modem fried (that it went through the phone line) so I just tossed that computer aside (my laptop) and got a desktop computer from my hubbys dad. Well now after less than a week that one is saying same thing modem doesn't detect a dial tone. My phone is plugged in through the back of the computer so I know there is a dial tone, but modem won't detect one. I was thinking virus??? What do you guys think, get a good virus program or take them to someone to fix? I am trying to do all my co op stuff and now i have NO WAY to do it at alll... HELP!!
