Maikoa - Does anyone know what this is?

Mississauga, ON(Zone 6b)

My sister-in-law sent me a seed packet from Richters Seed Co. in Goodwood Ontario today. The package says "Maikoa" cat. no. S3840. I went into their web site catalogue and all the info that's provided says it's "the tree Daturas used by aborigines of the western Amazon .... Produces a stunning display of large trumpet flowers 20 cm. long." Nothing as to colour etc. I've gone through the plant database, the Brugmansia society's web-page. Nothing! Is this likely just something they've given a name to?

The aborigines are from Australia,or?

daturalady, you can email them. I've emailed Richters before and they are pretty good at getting back to you quickly with answers to this sort of question.

Don't know Ludger. I just indicated exactly what the seed packet said. The description of the product no. in their web-site (www.richters.com) on-line catalogue just said in addition to what I input - "We ship Brugmansia arborea,Brugmansia X candida or Brugmansia suavelens depending on supplies".

Liz - thanks - I will send them an e-mail. I am going to soak the seeds tonight and plant them anyway. It's always nice to be surpised.

AH !! That rings a bell. I emailed them a couple of years ago about Maikoa. I was on an arborea quest. They did get back to me quickly, they said they couldn't quarantee that it was arborea. And to tell you the truth, daturalady,I only
know of 4 people in Canada who have arborea. And I lucked out, mine came as seed from Europe marked something else. I have to say though, arborea seed was just shipped to the BGI seed banks.

A quick google.com search indicates this would be arborea...

Thanks everyone. I'm too new to Brugs to have known.

I have to let you know that their catalogue is wrong. The brug x candida is in fact a datura innoxia. I ordered seeds and that what they turned out to be. I would caution anyone from ordering brug. x candida seeds from them.

The Maikoa they refer to is "supposed" to be brugmansia sanguinea. Their supplier for datura and brug seeds is from Germany, but they do not reveal who it is. This is what I was told when I called their office. Maybe you could post a pic of the seeds for someone to properly identify if they are infact brug seeds.

Here's a picture I've taken of the seeds.

Datura seeds.......but they will be pretty too.

Daturalady,
Sorry that you might be disappointed. I should have added that what they also send as brugmansia "arborea" are in fact brugmansia suaveolens. They use the old nomenclature for identifying their seeds.

Thanks all. I planted (sowed) 6 seeds today. I am just going see if any come up and what I get.

Old thread revised - what happened with the seeds that you planted?

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

Good Question.

Zippidy do dah! Nadda! I planted 6 or 7 - they never came up. I'm afraid growing from seed is not my forte.
