Golden Sage 'lutea' (Salvia africana)

San Francisco, CA(Zone 10a)

Very unusual large (over an inch in length) flowers on this sage. They are yellowish when they first start to emerge; but, quickly turn brown. Each contains a large droplet of sweet nectar.

Common name: Golden Sage 'lutea'
Family: Lamiaceae
Genus: Salvia
Species africana

I have never seen this color salvia! Do you have any seeds from this plant? If you do... I want some! PLEASE?!?!?!?!

Unfortunately, I didn't save any seeds this year.

I could try rooting a branch or two and if they do OK send those to you.

From what I've read, it's pretty easy to start.

Hi Erik -

I have this same Salvia....probably my favorite of all time. The coolest color on the flowers of any of the many Salvia varieties I grow. Smaller and more refined than some of the more common ones I grow for the hummers.

Do you have Salvia clevlandii ‘Winifred’s Daughters’ ? It was new to me this year and didn't do much at all, slow grower and no blooms here in the East Bay. Hopefully it will perform better by Spring or it may be relegated to compost.

Happenstance,

Smaller and more refined!? I inherited this monster when we moved into our current house and it was already over 10 feet tall with a nearly 2 inch thick main stem! It seems like if you were patient enough you could grow it into a standard. I hacked it down to a reasonable size this fall; but, it is still a pretty good size bush. I do really like the flowers and the leaves are quite handsome with a pleasant aromatic scent.

I haven't tried Salvia clevlandii. I did get a small Salvia brandegii (brandegei?) this fall, which I guess is somewhat similar. I've put it in the sunniest part of my garden and am hoping it will be established by next year.

Erik-

I was pruning my "small" (only two years old in the garden)africana-lutea this morning and could swear when I gathered the stems that I smelled clove. So I crushed some fresh off the plant and.......sure enough! Wondering if the aromatic I hear described could be the same. Have you had this same experience?

Thanks.

Marty-

Now that you mention it, it is kind of clove-like. Maybe with a little citrus thrown in.

Could you please clarify the color of this sage for me? It looks orange(y?) on my computer! That's of particular interest to me, as --for a 5-year period, at least--I'm doing only orange and purple for the main.
Thanks!

When the flowers are first coming out they are yellowish.

When they are open, as in the picture, to me, they are more of a tan/brown than orange.

Hope this helps!
