I have a pond heater and it has been working well this hard winter here. But my dh unplugged it yesterday to plow and forgot to plug it back in. I found the hole iced this morning pretty good.I plugged it in and is de-icing now. Will the fish and frogs still survive? I can't imagine having to replace everything....Thanks for any help!
The hole in my pond has iced over
They should be OK........mine iced over a few times and they all survived.....
I agree completely. Mine iced over for a day and my fish were just fine, including the babies. Your weather is going to warm up for 2 days too. Then cold again....
Went out earlier to check the thawing and there was a big bullfrog poking his head out of the water. Next thing he's sitting in the snow. I couldn't get him back in the water, figuring he will be froze by night. >sigh!
They should be just fine. They survive out in the lakes and ponds in the wild up there and those get frozen over in the winter.
I lost two frogs (one was HUGE) when mine suddenly iced over after it had thawed out - I didn't realize the frogs were trapped beneath the ice, and let the pond thaw naturally, which took a couple days :(
I'm sorry. I moved and have been off the site for almost 2 years. This thread is still on my page.
What to unfreeze ponds, fill a deep pan with hot water and place on the ice and let it naturally melt the ice. They say if you break the ice it may do something to the fish.
Don't know if it's true, but that's what I've read.
Has anyone tried the kids play ball in the pond, It's suppose to move around with the slightest breeze & keep the pond from freezing? I have not tried it, My dog pops any balls I bring in the yard!
I went to Europe in 1996 when we had a baaad winter. My pond iced over and all of my frogs died. I wonder just how long they can exist in their semi-hibernating state. Fortunately in the spring, they "find" the pond and come by the droves.
