Canadian Gardens # 2

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

The other thread was loading slowly. I'm not letting you off the hook though. I really need to see all your pictures.
For those of you who are lucky enough to garden on flat ground - this picture is from my living room floor down to the gardens. Everything has to be carried down 120 stairs from the street. This pic is a couple of years old. Do you feel sorry for me?

Land sakes Liz, you must be in excellent shape!!!!!!!!
Also, what don't you grow LOL?
That is a beautiful picture.
Ummmmmm want to see some more of my fresh snow? (big grin)

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

LOL RA. I just looked at the picture. It has to be 3 years old. For the last two summers you couldn't even see the decks, solid brugs. My livingroom is 5 floors above the gardens. So what goes down to the gardens pretty well stays there. All the brugs are at the bottom - lord knows what I'm going to do if I ever move.

MERCER, PA(Zone 5a)

Beautiful and beautifully maintained.

Will you be able to get to your yard as you age? Is there another route into the garden besides the steps?

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

LOL - I am aged. Those stairs are either going to kill me or keep me healthy. No, I guess they could bring me in by boat. I live on a very steep hill on the water.

rural, WY(Zone 3a)

The photo is beautiful, but gives no justice to the pitch! I am in reasonably good shape and I must always laugh at the top or bottom, becuase I am usually out of breath!

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

I know this for sure....cause I've walked the climb, up and down...a very pretty spread, Lize's garden!!!! Elaine

MERCER, PA(Zone 5a)

Liz,
Do you live near Kathy Renwald (spelling?), the host of the Gardener's Journal on HGTV? I know she often talks of her very steep yard leading to the water.

Thank you for the link to the Brugs. Very beautiful.

Thank you Brugie for telling me about the fragrance. I really look forward to growing these.
Ron

Burlington, ON(Zone 6a)

SillyLilly, Kathy Renwald lives in Hamilton, Ontario, near me.
The steep hill on her property is on the edge of the Hamiltom harbour, part of Lake Ontario.

MERCER, PA(Zone 5a)

Thanks! :O)

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

Sillylily..stop ..........now.......while you're ahead! The reason being.....both Liz and Brugie are on this forum and if I can relay to you about being inundated with Brugs..this is catchy you know!.....Course, I can't talk, with all the roses I grow!!! Elaine

Hamilton, Canada

Kathy Renwald lives in the same city as me. I've seen her gardens and they are very nice. Now me, I would need an escalator to get up those steep hills you have Liz!

Liz wrote" Do you feel sorry for me?" She has one of the nicest waterfront spots in North Vancouver. How could we feel sorry for you? The garden is amazing but there are an awful lot of steps, I guess that's what keeps Lizzy looking so young. Post some pictures with all the brugs on the decks. That is an amazing site.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Ron, this fall I can set you up with lots of brug cuttings. Just email me. Have to warn you that my memory isn't what it used to be, so I'll depend on you to remind me in early to mid September. Should have 50 or more kinds this year. I love to share most of them. If I'm keeping them in tree form, I usually don't do any cutting on them, but who could keep 50+ big trees in their basement? Not me!!

MERCER, PA(Zone 5a)

Dear Brugie,
I am overwhelmed by your generous offer. I shall wait here patiently until the fall with "baited" breath.
Thank You so very, very much.
Ron and Gloria
P.S. Could you use any extra daylilies?

(Not to worry, no mice were injured in the making of this photo!)

MERCER, PA(Zone 5a)

Not One daylily?!!! YIKES!! We'll have to do something about that. I'll write you tomorrow. Here is one of our favorites...Siloam Double Classic. If the winter has not been too cruel on our flowers, I think we could spare a couple. :O)

That one is amazing!!Had to look a couple times at it!
Will be looking forword to your mail,I'm a tropical nut,so let me know if there is anything I can trade?
Rtdr.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I just dug out all my daylilies. They were like giants and I needed the room for more tropicals. Thanks Ron, for the offer. I'd have to make another bed and I'm getting too old and arthritic to take care of what I already have. Thanks to Bob, I'll have some help getting my beds ready this spring. Everyone needs a rootdoctor.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Brugie....I have been following yours and The Roots posts on here........ I think this forum needs to make you both honorary Canadians!! I am just a silent voyeur on here.

Sillylily, your lily is sure a beauty! And be careful, Brugie really will send you cuttings of all her brugs! Be careful of what you wish for......LOL

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Kell, you gonna need some new brugs this fall to add to your pink garden? Maybe we will both have some new ones this year.......

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

lets hope Brugie!!!!

Burlington, ON(Zone 6a)

Ok you guys, I just picked this pod yesterday and it had 75 seeds in it. I have 50 I don't need, the rest are taken so if you want some, let me know.
It was on your Frosty Pink Liz, insect polinated and has been on the Brug since I brought it into the GH last Sept, slowly growing and ripening. I have one more pod almost ready to pick on about a week I figure.
If your are in the USA, I will try to send them in a note without my return address on it. ;-)

What other brug was close to it Ruth Ann? It's fun opening those pods isn't it?

Burlington, ON(Zone 6a)

Flowering neardy were:
Insignis Pink (Jeanne's)
Charles Grimaldi ( yours and Paul's)
Candida Double White
Dr Seuss.

Is Frosy Pink one that can be self pollinated Liz, all these others were at least 20 feet away so I was surprised when I saw the pods when I moved it to the GH.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

No, wild arborea and maybe Cypress Gardens. Maybe you just have very busy bees.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Ruth Ann,
Email me if you want the secret to mailing to the US. My packages always go through. They are unwilling to take packages with no return address on them after the Sept 11 thing.

How are your canna seeds doing? I forgot to ask you if you had them on bottom heat. If they have not sprouted yet, take the seeds out of the potting soil, nick them again, soak in water for 24 hours and plant them up again over bottom heat.

Burlington, ON(Zone 6a)

joydie1 thus far, all parcels and envelopes have reached their destinations to the US. :)) most with no return addy on them either. Some cutting parcels I put a declaration of 'Home Made Angel Trumpet' and marked them as a gift and they also went through ok.
I am stripping the ceiling insulation out of the GH today, bringing in the warm seeding box and making more room down there for the Brugmansia that are starting to take off.
The Cannas still are a 'no show' but have been on a warm spot. I will peek at the seeds tomorrow and see what they look like. I still have a few not started so may soak them longer than the first batch I did to see if that helps.

Isn't it a drop dead gorgeous day out there today!!!!!!! :))

Hamilton, Canada

Ahhhhh see Ruth Ann you know the secret about "gifts". As for the canna seeds, make sure you see them "swell" that's a good indication that the seeds were well nicked and that the water got into the hard seed coat to aid sprouting. I have another batch that I just started. I'm hoping these one will take off. (many thanks to CC). Did you order cannas from Dominion Seed? I saw that Versey's cannas are actually cheaper because you get 3 tubers and Dominion only offers one "bulb" The woman at the order desk didn't know if it was a tuber or one "eye" for that price. I still think I'm going to take a chance on Stuttgard and the new pink variegated one.
I'm going to have lots of "The President" from seeds that I started. Those sprouted in 2 days! I'll let you know how my other ones come up so let me know if your's don't. You have to remind me cuz I have short term memory loss and don't remember a lot of things...
