Cardoons...what a statement.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

I start some of these every year..they make outstanding foliage plants..get very big the first year..andadd texture unlike most other plants!....And if you have an extended season..you get artichokes!! LOL

Cool looking plant. Kinda resemble some of the thistles that I keep fighting off around here. I have to keep them under control. Have a feeling this one wouldn't do that.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Here is cardoon used at the Philadelphia Flower Show yesterday. The picture isn't the best because it was very dark in the convention center.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I belive that I have the verigated one in the back,if it comes up this year,it is cordoon or Thistle

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

Brugie, I know exactly how you feel. If I hadn't gotten mine from Powell Gardens I would have thought it was a thistle too. However they didn't get as tall for me and the foliage has a definate silver cast to it. Aren't those Canadian thistle magmificant looking plants tho? I also love the wild giant mullin which is being killed out by farmers and road crews around here. I have a couple or 3 started in one of our flower beds which I hope will perpetuate them for us.
RootDoc, if you have them in a rather sheltered place and it doesn't get too cold where it is growing it may be a cardoon. If the blooms are purple and the plants are REALLY sticker covered they are Canadian Thistle. .

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Eclipse, I've got some seeds of these, when should I sow them, and where? Inside or directly outside?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Leaflady, where is Hughsville located? If you are close, you should come join our roundup on May 3rd. We have a lot of the wild mullin along our roadways and I've picked the dry heads and tried to get it planted, but no luck yet. Those dry heads are great varnished or painted and used in flower arrangements.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Evert I have already started mine at work for outdoors..they already have 2 sets of leaves. I start them indoors early......so they will get huge in one summer before they freeze.

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

I see. So maybe I should sow mine too. Do they sprout fast?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Evert they like bottom heat to germinate.78 -80 F works good.

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

My Parks seed cataloge doesn't have the Cardoon seed, what should I be looking for?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Cynara cardunculus :)

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

I have the latest catalogue, and it's not in there, I even looked in the veggies section. Maybe they took that page out of my catalogue????

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Maybe they saw that you were a complete addict and knew they better remove it! LOL I didn't get it at all. That must mean I am certifiable!! :) I am splitting the seeds I have with tiG. Maybe datdog still has a few to spare?

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Anna, I have some I'll send you as long as I can locate them (LOL) can you say unorgaized? That should be my last name.
I'll get back to you tonight if I find them.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

look behind things on the kitchen counter. (wasn't that you??) lol

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

I've checked those counters *LOL* yep, that was me. I DO have them here somewhere, I started some about two months ago. Now to locate them. This will drive me nuts till I find them.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

FOUND THEM! YEAH... They were actually right where they were suppose to be(I'm shocked). In the seed box in the frig.
I have enough for three people if anyone else wants some. Anna_Z drop me your address and I'll get them out tomorrow.
Kristi

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Kristi, I'd like to try some if you have enough. Thanks,

Shirley

I'll email you too.

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

Hi,

if someone else wants Cynara cardunculus (native to the Mediterranean) seeds, I still have some 2002 collected seeds left. They have naturalised here and grow in the wild. We do not plant them in our gardens (although I agree they deserve to), but we love to eat the stalks of the leaves as salad. They must be 'peeled' like cellery and then cut in small pieces. Lots of iron in them. I like them specially mixed with boiled egg, pepper and olive oil.

Greetings and sunshine from Chile,

Ursula

PS.- if you want to check my updated trade-list, please refer to: www.gardenweb.com/members/exch/Ursula

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

i grew them a few years ago and they were beautiful,I tried to eat the stalks but I must have done something wrong(imagine that!) cause it was awful......
