I've gotten zero germination on my papaya seeds. Did a search and I found this page http://papaya-seeds.com/SeedGermination.htm Guess I should have soaked them to leach out the tannic acids. I'll tray again and see what happens ....
Papaya seeds
I found that page somehow, and did soak mine til they dropped to the bottom. Have only been planted a week, will let you know how it goes.
Kyle told me to plant the seeds as soon as you open the papaya and NOT to wash the yucky stuff off of them. I had way to many to plant, so I dried some and stored them. Have them soaking to plant tomorrow. I don't know if it will work or not. He also said that they like heat and humidity. I couldn't figure out why my seedlings wouldn't grow. I had them on heat, but didn't have humidity. Oh well, live and learn. Hope you gals have good luck with yours.
I think mine will do good Brugie. I did just like that link said, and half sank the first day, planted them, then the others sank the next day and I planted them. I feel good vibes coming from them:)
I'm heading out to the greenhouse to do some rinsing.
I have always planted the seeds as soon as I cut open the fruit.I plan them with the gel on them...something about leaving it on..helps them start.I have a tray of 48 of them at work now..these were large almost totally round fruit this time...very large...the seedlings came up in less than 2 weeks and have red stems with bright green leaves.
I got a sprout!! I spose it's nuthin to brag about... one out of 200 or so :/ - but heck! I only need one. After soaking and rinsing I put them in a paper towel and baggie. Maybe more will sprout pretty soon.
Any of yours up tiG?
yes, I have about 6 up.
I had 52 germinate...and guess what?? They have RED stems this year.Different variety.Papaya seeds need to be REALLY REALLY fresh to germinate properly. A few days after cutting open can decrease the germination rate dramatically. Just my observation. :-)
I got these from Shirley and I think she might have had them a little bit (from what I remember?? not sure)
anyway, I'm tickled to pieces to get any, so 6 is good to me.
Eclipse - I planted some of mine fresh from the fruit, with gell and goo. That was back in January... and they still haven't done a darn thing. Who knows how long the fruit had been picked from the tree tho. They may have been picked before the fruit was even ripe. I waited for it to be soft before I opened it up. The rest of the seeds I cleaned the goo off and dried them. Those are the ones I soaked ... and got my one sprout from. The red stems sound like they'll be gorgeous. You'll have to take a pic some time and show us.
sue, maybe it was a sterile one or something,I too bought one and planted some of the seeds and ALL of them came up.....have no clue what to do with them all......I did clean them first........
