I'm going to get an arborea if it kills me. I love the smaller blooms and especially the shape. Nice picture. Really shows the plant with the dark background.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

It has the heavy fragrance of Engelsglöckchen, not the sweet honey like fragrance of the normal species.

Monika..so the wild type form of arborea has a sweet honey like smell?

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

The sweet honey like fragrance distinguishes the wild form from the cultivar selection 'Engelsglöckchen'.

I thought Engelsglockchen was sterile? I am happy to hear it can carry into the seeds!

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

It doesnt set fruits by its own but is self fertile. The species B. arborea pollinates itself. I had plants, which looked like an apple tree, full of pods.

Monika, the arboreas that I grew from seed from HHG did not self pollinate. They only had a few pods that I hand pollinated. Do you think they were wild species or Engelsglockchen?

They were Engelsglöckchen seeds. I had to hand pollinate mine too. Its typical for Engelsglöckchen offspring.
Years ago, I had several plants of the genuine wild species.
I grew them from seeds. Like I said, they looked like apple trees. At the moment, it seems that nobody has them anymore. I asked already Ludger to seek for the wild species. I will get the real cv 'Engelsglöckchen' again in the summer and hope to find a genuine wild species again.
I love the sweet fragrance of these plants.

Monika, I am on my way.. Next month I will search in dutch mountains, lol.
One of my arboreas is setting pods by itsself.I must watch which one, next summer.

Thanks Monika, I kind of thought so. I have a few more waiting to bloom that have a little different looking leaves. I'll have to keep an eye on them and see if there self pollinate or not.
