Datura seedlings

St Peters Village, PA(Zone 6a)

After viewing padre's pix of his Brug seedlings - my daturas look just like this, but have for 16 days

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

My datura aren't growing fast either. I'm sure most of mine have been sitting there just waiting for a burst of energy to grow new leaves. Don't worry, they will probably shoot up before long. Most of mine will only be 6-8 inches tall by the first of May. They don't grow well until the heat gets to them. Then, watch out.

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

Sorry Shirley, I didnt see that you already answered this.

Your reply is better than mine in an other thread.

St Peters Village, PA(Zone 6a)

Thanks Brugie, I won't panic yet! When do you begin to fertilize?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I don't fertilize until they really begin growing and then not a full dose. Once I get mine in the greenhouse, they will get half strength for a while, and when actively growing big time, they will get plenty and I hate to admit it, but I mix a barrel of fertilized water and will fertilize almost every time I water.

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

SpringOaks, how long did it take for your datura to sprout? I planted mine about a week or two ago and am curious as to how long I should give them. I expected they wouldn't pop out right away, but I don't want them to rot either.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

If anyone is still having trouble in a few weeks, let me know. I've got about 20 more datura plants then I need. Mine have been growing strong for some time. Planted them to early this season. I'm ready to kick them out now. Taking up to much grow light room.

I just planted castor beans yesterday, Doc, do you have bottom heat?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Nope, have them upstairs,it's 72º,They always seem to start fast for me,want these for Iowa swap,I will go into the ground with the ones for the yard.:)

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Rootdoctor, do you have the castor beans & datura in the same place? That's about what temperature mine are at with the lights over them about 15 hours a day.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

They are side by side Morph.I'm at 16hrs on lights

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Thx :) Trying to be patient here. But, with the waiting goes all those thoughts like did I harvest them at the right time, did I chill them thoroughly enough, are they truly viable, etc... Just trying to keep those thoughts at bay and hope for the best!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Best way to do it is forget about them,I was looking at them every morning and evening then I went up to Shirleys and didn't look at them for 2 days,They have been coming up since. :)

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

Morph: Don't give up on them. They can take up to a month or more to germinate.

Root Dr: What do you have yours planted in. Peat pots or the jiffy pellets. Oh, I want a few of everything, so don't forget to bring anything to the roundup. I think we all had better go rent a u-haul for the day. If it is sunny tomorrow, I may just start sowing seeds in my greenhouse. I gotta catch up with you guys.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Debby,This is the first year that I am using the peat pellets,I guess that is what they are, they come in a tray and you add 2qts of warm water, then they swell,I pulled one to give away today and could see roots coming out the side and bottom.
My BIL works for Enterprise,I may rent a cargo van for the trip.:)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Bob, don't plan on the double white datura. I dug into the pot today and the seeds were totally gone......I got my seed packet out and it was empty, so I had evidently planted all I had first time around. Shucks!!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

No problem S,that will give me something to look for.:)Sorry about yours.:(

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Debby & Root, thanks for the encouragement!

I'm sorry about your double, white datura, Brugie :( I can send you a few triple purle seeds to cheer you up if you'd like. (Not guaranteed to grow just yet as I'm still waiting to see)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks Deb, but I have plenty of the purple ones growing right now. I'll go on a search and see if I can find the double whites again. I'm just afraid they might be late blooming and I won't get seeds, that is if I can find any seeds to start with.

Mukwonago, WI(Zone 5a)

Hey Root....I've got a few of the double white datura seeds and will attempt to start soaking them today. That way...IF they decide to germinate...I will bring the seedlings to the swap for you. I'm unsure as to how many seeds I actually still have. I'd like to have only one plant so I'll start 5 seeds. You can have whatever is left if you would you rather start them yourself. I also have a few (very few) double creams if you are interested.

I'm going to start some triple yellow daturas at work this week..had the purples last year.....so its yellow this year!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I have a feeling this is going to be a great swap!!!

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

Root Dr.: I think your right, it's going to be a great swap. When the weather breaks here, another snowstorm is hitting us tomorrow. I am going to start the Eryngium Blue Datura [blackcurrant swirl]. We will have such a variety of datura's. You might of talked me into bringing a few columbine, too.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I'm a closet columbine collector,don't tell anyone,LOL,

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

Shhh, Root. I won't. And don't want to hi-jack this thread. So mum's the word.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Speaking of Hi-jack,where are you Springoaks?you can see we are not a shy group, just jump in here anywhere,LOl
