Lotus co-op?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hi All, Just talked to the guy at the local hatchery/pond store. Right now they are harvesting lutea (native yellow) and next week it will the the Hindu variety (pink). Starting price on these is $20, but he says he will cut to $15 on an order of ten or more and $10 on an order of $50 or more. I told him I would check for interest before I drove him nuts over which others are available. LOL He says the tubers on the lutea are 4-6" long and the Hindus are 6"-1'. Any interest in these?

if I could get a pink for $10 I'd want one. that's on a $50 order?? or 50 lotus?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

tiG, he is going by number of Lotus. There may still be some room to work with him. He said they are harvesting by the thousand. This is the place I mentioned in other posts that has acres of ponds. Terribly impressive when they are all in bloom! I am going to see if they have a website, I think they do. I have been dying to go down with my camera and never think of it.

Here is their website!: http://www.jonesfish.com/index.html If you check the price list you will see that they are $49.99 potted. That is why I am getting tubers now. LOL They promised to treat them with fungicide and give them to me in packing material safe for the journey. If there is not enough interest in them, that is fine. I am getting some either way! LOL

I really can't go to the highest price, even though it's still a steal. post this in all the forums it might fit, maybe we can get 50.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh tiG, don't give up yet. I posted in co-op too. Maybe I should post in perennials as well? One of the girls that works there, dates my hubbies cousin. I'll keep plugging away until we have enough people or I get us a good deal. LOL I do buy my fish and fish food there and it is a neat place!

There you are! Thought I lost you. LOL I will ask him if I can mix and match. Honestly I would like both. If he has no problem with it, it's a go. :) I know he is harvesting the luteas now and the Hindus in a few days. Woo hoo, we gonna get some lotus!!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

If you can mix and match and get the price down to 10 bucks each I'll take 2 pink and 2 yellow.......

Clay Center, KS(Zone 5b)

I would like a pink one also, sounds like the numbers are coming in for you.

New York City, NY(Zone 6b)

I see these plants at the NYBG, cultivated in the ponds behind the conservatory.

I do not have a pond. I live in an apartment. On the other hand, I have a tub I could fill with water to then put the potted tuber inside.

I have both East and West unobstructed exposures (not so bad for NYC, eh?)

Does anyone have any experience doing this in pots?

I'm not so price sensitive, but don't want to just toss money away.

Thanks for the guidance.

Adam.

Can any one tell me if I can pot them, leave them in our ponds for the summer, and bring them in and winter them in the fruit cellar dry? Or could possibly put them in watering tank to winter over as I am doing some baby water lilies this winter. I live in zone 4.

I will take one pink and one yellow.

Thanks, Maxine

This thread has some great info about their culture http://davesgarden.com/t/374081/

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh Adam, if you had ever visited Calalily, you would have no question about pot culture at all! LOL I was there in July and she had huge ones in large pots and they looked great! Since my water garden is lined with swimming pool liner, I am going to do big pots or a bog. :)

Plumieville, PA(Zone 6b)

Hi, I would be interested in 1 Hindu variety (pink) maybe more depending on price.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I think this puts us up to 22. I have not added to the list since Eden joined us. I am going to call him back tomorrow. I am sure he will let me mix colors. The more we buy, the less he has to pot up. LOL He only gave me a price break for 10 and 50. I want to find out if I can get maybe $12.50 if we reach 25. A compromise of sorts. LOL Would everyone go for that??

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

yes

Plumieville, PA(Zone 6b)

sounds good !

New York City, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks PoppySue..., I am looking at various cultural guides for these plants and the one you point out is very helpful.

My real question is..., given my very limited gardening exeperience..., can I successfully grow these. I just need to make up my mind.

;~)

Adam.

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

Badseed: If he will mix colors, add a yellow one to the pink. That would be a total of 2.
