I have wanted these for awhile. I just saw them at Lowe's, but it is $6 for one lemon sized tuber. Even the regular green ones are $6 for several small ones. Last year I bought ones the size of small pineapples. What gives?? I guess I will be forced to buy one or a few, if no one has them. This is the first time I have seen them offered locally.
Anyone have upright elephant ears?
Go to your last post in plant trading:)
'Chele, are you looking for these?

I'm not sure what an 'upright' EE is but I have several of these if you'd like.
I believe they are Colocasia macorhiza but the spelling is wrong. LOL I can't look right now as my one year old is having a serious tantrum!!
Nap is over. Neither of us slept. Argh. I did check your post Doc and I wrote back. :) Thanks!
Stacey, the uprights are Colocasia macrorhiza and what makes them different is that the leaves stand up off the end of the stems as opposed to hanging off them. They sort of remind me of banana plants in the way they grow. :)
A nice pic Eclipse - look at those caladiums! Lovely combination you have there.
Well that is better than any picture I found! And I get a cute guy to boot! :) That is a great combination planter!
You did a awsome job with the planting! And look at your shirt, I love it. Hey, it's not a chessy pic, and at least your in a photo. I run from the camera.
Hey, if you have time can you post a couple of your planter pictures? I remember seeing one a long way back.
I'm having a bad case of winter right about now.
Thanks
More later..I gotta find em?? when you have about 3000 pics on plants in your puter it takes a while!!LOL
Kyle - which banana is that? It's beautiful.
Liz its musa Zebrina.....they sell them at Lowes in the spring $6.77 for a large plant.
Kyle, what on top right of the last one with the burgundy palmate leaves?BTW,all of them look great!
Kinda looks like a castor bean to me, but I'm not sure.
root its castor 'Red Spire" a rare red smaller form. Gets as big as the container.......you didn't get my email about these a while back?
Kyle, why don't you grow a few of those for the swap. I'd be interested. I didn't know they were going to be smaller.
Is that a huge tropical Hibiscus at the top, Kyle? Elaine
Roselaine its a tree form of "painted Lady" tropical hibiscus. We get them at K mart garden centers in the spring. :-)
No Kyle I did not get mail from you.I like the castors, did you get some seeds or do you do plants each year?
rootdoctor..I have many kinds of castors..I use to collect them out west. Red Spire was almost OUT of cultivation...was popular many many years ago..then people lost interest..so it almost faded away like so many other plants that were popular in the 60' and 70's. :-)
Kyle, if you have plenty of seeds of that one, I'd be glad to keep it going in the south!
NO DOUBT tiG! Kyle you have mail!
I didn't even know there were that many to collect. Oh dear, dare I google??
I'm already taking notes of your combinations. Superb.
Thank you, Kyle. Went to bed early and missed this last night. They are simply gorgeous. You really have a eye for plant combinations. How much maint. does a container of this size take?
I really like the look of the smaller castor bean. I'd never heard of this one. Actually early in the fall I started a search for castor beans. Couldn't find much information on them. I also had trouble finding supplier who had ANY different types to offer. Ended up purchasing some from a gal who grows many different types. None are named, just crosses she's done.
If you have time, I'd love to hear about some of the castors you grow.
If you do have even one extra seed of this beauty, add me to your growing list of folks who would like one. *grin*
I'll be sure to photo my castors this summer to see if any are keepers. Will save the seeds and be sure to 'pass the love'. *grin*

Kyle,your planters are beautiful!!
Thank you for sharing all your wonderful pictures-I sure have enjoyed seeing them.
If you have an extra seed or two of this pretty castor bean-I would love to be on your list for this one.
Thanks,
Colie

Michele, here are the ears I have left from the co-ops. I ordered two different batches. Lost one kind totally, and one or two from some of the others. Anyway, lost a total of 8 plugs. I'm totally happy with them except a couple of them that are growing slowly. Sounds like they will take off when outside though. I think I got a good deal at the prices these go for from nurseries.
Wow Brugie! Those look nice and healthy! I love the Hilos! That is what is in front isn't it? I am thinking I need to put a light on mine. They are in front of a window with some of the Brug seedlings and the Brug seedlings are really taking off but not much from the ears yet.
Yep, the speckled one is HiLo. I'm not one for remembering names, so I had to go look. Mine have been under small grow lights all along. Amazonica got to tall for the lights so now I've taken them all out from under light and they are just going to have to make do with window light and probably not much of it.
I wrote back to you Shirley. Thanks a bunch!! I did have a big grow light on mine then had to move them because the kitty liked digging in the huge pot. They are planted in that baby bathtub I grew my caladiums in last year.
Shirley...hilo beauty is incredibly slow to take off.....
Thanks Kyle. It is doing better than Black Magic. The one you gave me is doing great, but I needed more to share with my niece and Renee so I got some of them too. Very slow.
Eclipse, thanks for the pictures. They are beautiful. I spent all day out side in the rain planting annuals in my flower bed! I have to have some flowers growing now! I have spring fever so bad! I guess I am lucky living here in Florida where it is spring now! This is my second year here and I am loving it!!
